The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending unauthorized U.S. military involvement in Iran, marking the most significant congressional challenge yet to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and would require the administration to obtain explicit authorization from Congress before continuing hostilities against Iran, except in cases involving an imminent threat to the United States. The vote followed months of growing bipartisan concern over a conflict that began in.

US military says Gaza Strip pier project is completed, aid to soon flow as Israel-Hamas war rages on. The U.S. military finished installing a floating pier on Thursday, with officials poised to begin ferrying badly needed humanitarian aid shortly.

‘RETREATIN BIDEN’ – US lays out plans for withdrawing troops from Niger. The two American bases, enabling drone operations for more than a decade, have been used to contain groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

US faces uncertainty in Africa as forces gather for special operations exercise. WEAK MOVE – US will send an unofficial delegation as Taiwan’s president is sworn in. It’ll test ties with China. The move is certain to upset China but unlikely to draw excessive responses from Beijing as the two countries try to stabilize relations.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

The West doesn’t understand how much Russia has changed. Vladimir Putin’s trip to Beijing this week, where he will meet with Xi Jinping and top Chinese officials, is another clear demonstration of the current closeness between Russia and China.

Blinken announces $2B arms deal for Ukraine. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the aid as Washington seeks to bolster Ukrainian troops on the front line against a major Russian offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

Defending in its north, Ukraine faces pressure all along front line. Ukraine is slowing Russia’s push near Kharkiv, but still faces pitched battles there, as well as other hotly contested areas farther south.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

Will North Korea be a bigger threat under Biden or Trump? Team Biden has largely kept the threat of North Korea’s nuclear program on the back burner. But tensions have been ratcheting up for years, opening a new and uncertain chapter in a standoff that, just six years ago under then-President Trump, seemed to be on the cusp of a breakthrough.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

France undecided on US offer to join ‘Olympic Defender’ space effort. The US invitation is significant as it reflects the Pentagon’s desire to more tightly tie its allies into its efforts to deter and defend against hostile Chinese and Russian activities.

WOW – Slovakia debuts rapid-fire mortar at local defense show. The 120mm self-propelled mortar is advertised as firing 20 rounds of ammunition per minute, a rate that would make it one of the fastest in Europe.

US MILITARY
