Forget Everything You’ve Heard, You Hold The Key To Trump’s Fate

-

Another week, another indictment of former President over his role in both the mob violence that rocked on Jan. 6, 2021, and his actions to stop/change/interfere with the lawful counting of the Electoral College votes.

The case filed in , is probably the most ambitious of the charges brought so far. It paints Trump & Co. as a criminal organization that operated across multiple states, included several co-conspirators, and continued to operate long after Trump had left office. As The Wall Street Journal reported, this will be a tough case to bring to bring to court quickly, or even at all. But setting aside the contents of the indictment (which you can read here), the strength of the County's charges (which are either sometimes “gratuitous” and “kind of sloppy,” or “a bombshell,” depending on your analysis), I still contend that only voters can issue a decisive verdict. And not just guilty or innocent. But one that either puts the former president's electoral ambitions permanently to rest, or utterly refutes the many, various, and increasingly creative legal means arrayed against him.

That's not popular among some, who prefer to give Trump a fair trial and a thorough hanging irrespective of what a jury – never mind voters – may think. Nor is it in vogue with those who believe Trump did nothing wrong and even if he did, what about this, how about that, and what about the other? Trump's legal issues were a thing long before he entered politics. These most recent indictments are part of a long, complex, chain of courtroom encounters. But unlike those earlier cases, the most recent batch go to the heart of our democracy.  Shrugging them off is dangerously naïve.

In a world where political accountability was a real thing, Trump would be in a Nixonion political exile. Instead, Trump not only leads the GOP presidential field, but he is also the heavy favorite to be the party's presidential nominee. Courts may slow his return down, make it expensive, even deeply embarrassing, for Trump & co. along the way. But only voters have the power to send him home for good.

Perhaps they will. But that assumes a great deal – more, it seems, than anyone has a right or reason to assume in these times, when

  1. I already wrote a comment but since it didn’t show up…I’ll try again…so you say that “only voters can send Trump home”….if we had that power….he would be in the White House instead of the current baffoon that didn’t even get out of his basement. No…it seems as if the only ones that can eliminate Trump…or at least try…. are the Democrats and their corrupt justice system. I’m not going to :vote Trump home”….I will be voting for him to take his rightful place as President of the United States.

  2. I will be more inclined to believe that Donald Trump did something un-kosher when I see ‘Hanging-Chad’ Al Gore and Queen Hillary swinging from the proverbial yardarm first. Because they sang the same ‘stolen election’ refrain, only much worse. But it won;t happen, will it?
