A review of health insurance data reveals that “do-it-yourself” abortion pills, advertised as safe by the abortion lobby, are maiming and harming over 10% of the women who use them.
“Our dataset of insurance claims for the years 2017 to 2023 identified 692,873 patients who obtained 865,727 chemical abortions (indicating repeat abortions among a significant portion of the dataset). This represents 25% of the chemical abortions that occurred in the U.S. according to Guttmacher Institute’s chemical abortion estimates for the same time period,” the Foundation for the Restoration of America reports.
“The percentage of abortions that resulted in at least one serious adverse event was 10.9 percent over the seven-year study period. The dataset further shows an upward trend in serious adverse event rates in recent years. In 2023 alone, 154,554 chemical abortions occurred with a serious adverse event rate of 11.2 percent,” the Foundation for the Restoration of America reports.
Pro-life advocates are now sounding the alarm for women and babies.
“While the abortion industry and Democrat politicians push the lie that abortion drugs are ‘safer than Tylenol,’ a growing body of evidence suggests these risky drugs are much more dangerous than advertised. The harm to women and girls as well as their unborn children simply can’t be ignored,” said SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser.
“Even in the corporate media, reports have surfaced of at least three women dying in recent years after drug-induced abortions. All three deaths occurred after Biden’s FDA removed critical safety protections for women and girls, including the requirement to see a doctor in person – making the deadly drugs widely available by mail-order to abusers and traffickers who assault and poison their victims. Planned Parenthood now boasts of distributing abortion drugs by app, ‘completely free of face-to-face interaction with a clinician,’ even though their own data show more than twice as many adverse events than the total reported to the FDA,” said Dannenfelser.
“The new reports uncovered today are disturbing. We urge the FDA under new leadership to take a fresh, hard look at the data and reinstate strong safeguards for women and girls,” said Dannenfelser.
“Previously in 2024, a peer-reviewed study by Charlotte Lozier Institute scholars published in the International Journal of Epidemiology and Public Health Research found that 75% of emergency room visits within 30 days of the use of abortion drugs were coded as severe or critical,” SBA Pro-Life America reports.
Despite the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing states to regulate abortion, the number of abortions committed in the U.S. is growing, with do-it-yourself abortion pills driving up the death toll.
“The Guttmacher Institute, a non-profit research organization dedicated to advancing abortion in the United States and worldwide, estimates that chemical abortion represented 63 percent of abortions in 2023, up from 53 percent in 2020 and 31 percent in 2014. The growth in chemical abortion is likely driving the growth in total abortions in the United States, which increased 11 percent from 2020 to 2023,” the Foundation for the Restoration of America reports.

Leaving Roe v. Wade intact would have prevented much of the alleged harm of do-it-yourself abortions. There are also women who need, but now can’t obtain, abortions for legitimate medical reasons.
