Law-abiding gun owners in New York are not out of the proverbial woods yet despite last week’s Supreme Court ruling in NYSRPA v. Bruen, which found the state’s “may issue” provisions for concealed carry permits to be an unconstitutional violation of Second Amendment rights. Today, the New York State Legislature is meeting for a special session in Albany to discuss putting further restrictions on law-abiding gun owners.
Local news outlet WGRZ has more on the legislation under debate:
According to the legislation released Friday, New York’s new system would require applicants to undergo 15 hours of in-person training at a firing range, sit down for an in-person interview, provide their social media accounts, provide contact information for household members, renew their license after three years and face monthly background checks. The bill also sets up an appeals process.
Under the new system, the state wouldn’t authorize permits for people with convictions within the past five years for driving while intoxicated, menacing or third-degree assault.
People with concealed carry permits won’t be permitted to carry firearms at a long list of “sensitive places” ranging from Times Square to protests to schools and universities.
The proposal would also make carrying firearms into businesses where owners haven’t put up signage saying guns are welcome a felony.
It is also rumored to effectively outlaw firearms in New York City.
Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) commented earlier this week on the murder of a 20-year-old woman who was shot in the face while pushing a three-month-old baby in a stroller in his city. Once again, Adams blamed guns, that as far as I know do not walk off shelves and shoot people by themselves, despite Democrats’ repeated attempts to convince the American electorate that they do just that.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) was also unable to back up an unreasonable claim she made about conceal carry permit holders at a press conference on Wednesday.
For belonging to the party that claims to love data and science, New York Democrats don’t seem to have much of either.
Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin, who won his party’s gubernatorial nomination earlier this week, blasted his state’s current leaders and their overarching attempts to infringe upon Second Amendment rights.
Zeldin also commented on Hochul’s laser-focused targeting of conceal carry permit holders in another tweet, saying “When it comes to repealing cashless bail, Hochul needs more data even though it’s right in front of her face. When it comes to restricting gun rights of law abiding NYers, she does not want any data. Once again, Kathy Hochul is a walking identity crisis and in over her head.”

The court did say that the states had the right to impose restrictions on places people would be permitted to carry their guns. Private business already had the right to require customers not be armed.
What makes Times Square any more”sensitive” a place than Herald Square or Columbus Circle?
And yes, private businesses have the right to post signs saying firearms are NOT welcome but what the NY Democrats’ bill is proposing is that private businesses must post that firearms ARE specifically welcomed. If they do not post a welcome sign, then entering with one is grounds for arrest and felony charges.
And just to make sure that the system is as overburdened as possible, they are proposing MONTHLY background checks. Concealed permit holders are statistically more law abiding than law enforcement officers. So, aside from wasting time and money on a bunch of unnecessary bureaucracy, what do they think monthly background checks are going to accomplish? And who is going to be responsible for running all those background checks and maintaining the records and the necessary cyber-security for the records which, by their very nature, are sensitive information. Don’t forget that these are the same people who want to “de-fund the police.”
