Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

THURSDAY PDB – Voters, please think about the menace of nuclear annihilation. Future historians, if there are any, will be dumbfounded. Today, uncountable dollars and unquantifiable hysteria are devoted to the distant threat of climate change.

Meanwhile, negligible public anxiety accompanies the intensifying danger of global incineration from nuclear war. And Joe Biden is only making it worse.

MEANWHILE – Russian space nuke could render low-Earth orbit unusable for a year, US official says. Moscow’s recent veto of a UN resolution against putting nuclear weapons in space raises grave concerns.

AND – US official urges China, Russia to declare only humans, not AI, control nuclear weapons.  Only humans, and never artificial intelligence, should make decisions on deploying nuclear weapons.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of today’s other top defense stories from conservative national security expert PAUL CRESPO.

Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – PAUL’S DAILY BRIEFING – the PDB:

NATIONAL SECURITY

Biden’s FY25 budget cuts missile defense when we need it more than ever. Despite the incredible performance of missile defenses in Ukraine, Israel and the Red Sea over the past 12 months, Biden’s fiscal 2025 defense budget cuts missile defenses.

Navy air defense mission in the Red Sea makes case for directed energy weapons, says VCJCS Grady. Downing Iranian-supplied missiles and drones with multi-million-dollar SM-2 missiles to protect shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden is a bad exchange that must change.

HOMELAND SECURITY

Police crack down on pro-Hamas protests at US campuses as tensions over Gaza war simmer.

Former Guard generals warn of more Guard use in domestic, political missions. The uptick of non-traditional or politically charged missions presents problems for troops.

National Guard boss warns of potential ‘critical’ fighter shortage. A shortage of fighters, pilots, and maintainers in the reserve components could leave the military short-handed in a possible conflict.

Discord leaker may face court-martial as Air Force levies new charges. The Air Force has charged Teixeira, an airman 1st class in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, with additional charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

POLITICS

House passes antisemitism bill with broad bipartisan support amid campus arrests. Republicans are seeking to launch investigations into antisemitism on college campuses in response to the pro-Hamas protests.

Democrats signal further increases to defense funding could come at cost for GOP. Any increases to defense spending beyond the budget limits agreed to as part of a bipartisan deal last year must also be met with parity for domestic programs.

Congress presses SECNAV for answers on recruiting challenges. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro was grilled about how the Navy plans to rectify its challenges recruiting new sailors, after the service missed its recruitment goals for the first time ever in fiscal year 2023.

House lawmakers from both sides denounce Pentagon’s planned drop in submarine orders to just one Virginia-class attack submarine in fiscal 2025 instead of two.

US POWER OVERSEAS

US military pier to begin operations off Gaza as soon as this weekend. Operations will begin by Friday. However, that timeline could be delayed by weather or logistical issues.

US says it will return to Chad for talks to keep troops in the country. It hopes to revise an agreement that allows it to keep troops based there, an American general said Wednesday.

US Army brigade begins long-haul convoy inside the Arctic Circle. More than a thousand U.S. soldiers are making a long-distance trek this week in upper Norway, bound for a Finnish artillery range for drills showcasing stepped-up efforts to defend NATO’s new Arctic border with Russia.

ISRAEL’S WAR AGAINST TERROR

Blinken presses Hamas to seal hostage-release/cease-fire with Israel, says ‘the time is now’ for a deal.

Lebanon’s military stagnates amid economic turmoil, Hezbollah influence. The Lebanese terror group has exchanged near-daily strikes with Israeli forces near the border region for almost seven months.

CHINA THREAT

China has crossed Biden’s red line on Ukraine. Joe Biden warned Xi not to provide ‘material support’ to Russia. Will there be consequences?

Chinese aircraft carrier Fujian leaves for first set of sea trials. China’s third aircraft carrier Fujian (18) left Shanghai on Wednesday morning to conduct its first sea trial.

TO DEFEND TAIWAN – Kadena adds more stealth fighters amid ‘increasingly challenging strategic environment.’ F-22A Raptors from the 27th Fighter Squadron at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., recently arrived at Kadena Air Base in Japan, bolstering the fifth-generation airpower at the closest U.S. military installation to Taiwan.

Outgoing US Indo-Pacific commander urges more action to counter China’s military power. Team Biden calls the People’s Republic of China the only country with the will, intent, and military strength to change the world order, but isn’t doing enough about it.

An ‘East Asian NATO’ is forming.  This could potentially set the stage for a spectacular shift in Asia’s Sino-American balance of power.

Why the Solomon Islands election matters to China and the US. This, as Beijing extends its reach into a region traditionally dominated by the U.S. and Australia, forging security agreements that could further its military aims across the Pacific.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Kremlin parades Western equipment captured from Ukrainian army at Moscow exhibition.

Russia breached global chemical weapons ban in Ukraine war, US says. Russia is deploying the choking agent chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops and using riot control agents “as a method of warfare” in Ukraine.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

IDIOT! – Following last year’s turmoil, SECNAV says Navy should have been buying amphibs sooner. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro defended the service’s plans to pause amphib shipbuilding during last year’s budget cycle, despite fierce congressional backlash.
