Is this a prelude to absorbing parts of our northern neighbor? There has been a lot of talk by President Donald Trump of making Canada our 51st state with Trump repeatedly referring to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “governor.”
Trump has also made threats to somehow turn nearby Greenland into a U.S. territory. All in the valid name of Arctic security and critical natural resources.
While most observers are smart enough to not take these comments literally, they should take them seriously.
The Canadian prime minister was recently caught on a hot mic warning that Trump’s annexation calls may appear to be “a real thing” after initially shrugging them off as a joke.
And now, according to The Telegraph, Peter Navarro, one of Trump’s closest and most fiercely loyal advisers (he spent four months in prison in 2024 for defying a congressional subpoena related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot), is pushing U.S. negotiators to discuss reworking the border with their Canadian counterparts.
Navarro has also allegedly proposed expelling Canada from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network, the most important intelligence-sharing network in the world.
He recently denied these reports about Canada and Five Eyes.
As Trump’s senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, Navarro is “ruling the roost,” sources told the paper.
“Peter Navarro is in post, and he is taking advantage of being there by himself with no one else in post to challenge his extreme positions. This will change as soon as the many other trade and economic positions are filled,” the source said. (RELATED: Fox News Interrupts Navarro’s Press Conference With Fact Check)
The Telegraph reported that “Canada has now instructed its delegates to withdraw from negotiations with the U.S. until Jameson Greer and Howard Lutnick, two incoming members of Mr Trump’s cabinet, are confirmed by the senate.”
“The Canadians have told their people to hold off negotiating with the U.S. government until Jamieson Greer and Howard Lutnick are confirmed by the Senate and in post,” the source told The Telegraph.
The outlet added that Greer and Lutnick are viewed by Ottawa as being less extreme.
But all this comes as Trump, speaking at the first cabinet meeting of his new term, doubled down on his plans to make Canada America’s 51st state.
“We protect Canada, but it’s not fair. It’s not fair that they’re not paying their way, and if they had to pay their way they couldn’t exist,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, the president also vowed to proceed with planned 25% tariffs on Canada, which had been paused for 30 days after Trudeau agreed to take stronger action against illegal migration and drug trafficking into the U.S.
At the time, Canada agreed to reinforce the border with “new choppers, technology and personnel.”
However, now we see more clearly what Trump’s game plan may be. He is now seeking control of the $9 billion Keystone XL Pipeline that would bring 830,000 barrels per day of oil to US refiners from Canada’s Western tar sands. First proposed in 2008, the critical pipeline project that would aid the U.S. in becoming energy dominant was stopped by Joe Biden when he revoked a key permit needed for a U.S. stretch of the project.
“The company building the Keystone XL Pipeline that was viciously jettisoned by the incompetent Biden Administration should come back to America, and get it built – NOW!” Trump posted on his Truth Social media network.
“If not them, perhaps another Pipeline Company,” he added. “We want the Keystone XL Pipeline built!”

I’m a Trump supporter but I don’t agree with Canada becoming 51’s state or the Greenland deal.
I am not against the idea of Canada becoming a 51st state, but we had had millions of immigrants come in in the last few decades. Is anybody giving all these people lessons on what America all about?
The Declaration of Independence, our history, our values, what makes us distinctly the US? Like making a recipe, and then you keep adding new ingredients, and then it’s not what it was supposed to be.
I’ve thought about Mexico becoming a state. But it should be a process. They should learn English, learn our principles. It should not be just a change of name and they get Representives and Senators. It would change us into something we are not nor should be.
Good update our maps then
