Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

While he denied threatening.

NATIONAL SECURITY

The defense America needs: Assessing Biden’s budget proposal. What’s actually in the Biden administration’s defense budget request? As the armed services committees markup the annual defense bill this month and as appropriators get to work, which of the administration’s defense proposals should Congress accept, reject, and tweak?

US heavily reliant on China, Russia for ammo. Congress wants to fix that. The mineral antimony is critical to the defense-industrial supply chain and is needed to produce everything from armor-piercing bullets and explosives to nuclear weapons as well as sundry other military equipment, such as night vision goggles.

Brookings places retired general on leave amid FBI probe. The prestigious Brookings Institution has placed its president, retired four-star Marine Gen. John Allen, on administrative leave amid a federal investigation.

HOMELAND SECURITY

Putting armed veterans into schools is madness. Politicians need to stop turning to the military to solve every problem.

Iowa Guard sergeant killed fellow soldier and civilian in ‘targeted’ shooting, sheriff says. An Iowa National Guard soldier and a civilian woman were both killed by another Guardsman during a June 2 shooting at Cornerstone Church in Ames, Iowa.

CHINA THREAT

Chinese pilots sent a message. American allies said they went too far. Australia and Canada said Chinese jets harassed their military planes, though Beijing says it was defending its security. A mishap over Pacific waters could have ominous repercussions.

Australia and Canada accuse China of ‘dangerous’ air intercepts; Beijing pushes back. Australia and Canada have accused China of conducting dangerous intercepts of maritime patrol aircraft performing routine surveillance and sanctions-monitoring missions over the East and South China seas.

RUSSIA THREAT

As Russians advance in Donbas, invasion success hangs in the balance. The fight for Ukraine’s Luhansk and Donetsk Oblasts hangs on a knife-edge — and the outcome may decide the future of the Donbas for years to come.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 106. Russian forces control most of the strategic city of Severodonetsk and are heavily shelling the twin city of Lysychansk, causing major damage, the governor of Luhansk region said. Two British nationals and a Moroccan captured while fighting for Ukraine could face the death penalty in one of Russia’s proxies in eastern Ukraine, Russia’s RIA state news agency reported.

As Russia tries to solidify its ‘land bridge,’ Ukraine attempts to push back in the south. Defense Minister Sergei K. Shoigu said on Tuesday that Russia’s military, working with Russian Railways, had repaired about 750 miles of track in southeastern Ukraine and set the conditions for “full-fledged traffic” to flow from Russia, through Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, to occupied territory in Kherson and on to Crimea.

Top general details plan to train Ukrainians on rocket artillery. The plan is contingent on an initial group of Ukrainian soldiers showing proficiency on it, said Army Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The transfer of additional rocket artillery to Ukraine from existing U.S. Army or U.S. Marine Corps stocks also would require explicit approval from the Biden administration.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Spain wants NATO to flag migration as ‘hybrid threat’ in policy roadmap, says foreign minister. The June 29-30 summit in Madrid will be one of the most important since NATO’s inception in 1949. It will draft the alliance’s “Strategic Concept” for the next decade, outlining its mission against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the admission of new members such as Finland and Sweden.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

Journalists finally advised to stop referring to all veterans as former snipers, Special Forces. A new update to the Associated Press style guide wants journalists to be more specific when writing about service members and veterans.

The US Space Force is your eye in the sky. We are expanding and modernizing our satellite fleet to detect and track hostile missile launches.

Marine Corps aircraft with 5 on board crashes in Southern California desert. The MV-22B Osprey belonged to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Camp Pendleton and went down at 12:25 p.m. during training, said Maj. Mason Englehart, spokesman for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

Security at our schools is a MUST now. Terrorists and crazy people will always find ways to get their weapons and disarming good citizens will just embolden these bad individuals. No one should be allowed to buy guns before age 25 and no automatic weapons sold to people without extensive background check.
