Realistic observers of the various federal, state and local mandates to switch from oil and gas to an all-renewable energy economy have wondered how much it will all cost consumers.
New York state is providing some answers. Unsurprisingly, the switch is taking a not-insignificant bite out of family budgets:
Some upstate New York electric customers are already paying 10 percent of their utility bill to support the state's effort to move off fossil fuels and into renewable energy. In the coming years, people across the state can expect to give up even bigger chunks of their income to the programs — $48 billion in projects is set to be funded by consumers over the next two decades.
Also coming as no surprise: these price hikes have tangible political consequences for the state Democrats who pushed through the new clean energy mandates now hitting customers in the wallet:
…some lawmakers in New York, particularly upstate Democrats, and similar moderates across the nation are worried about moving too quickly and sparking a backlash against higher costs. The issue is another threat to Democrats heading into the critical 2024 battleground House races in New York, which will be instrumental in determining control of Congress.
Even Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat who is fond of saying that “we're the last generation to be able to do anything” about climate change, last spring balked at the potential price tag of a policy to achieve New York's climate targets.
Because magic dust was supposed to pay for it? Of course, ratepayers were going to foot the bill. They always have and always will. And matters will only get worse so long as corporate welfare plays such a big role in green energy production:
With renewable developers asking for higher subsidies to deal with inflation, those costs are expected to increase while expected savings from the transition takes longer to materialize.
There's much more at the link, including the usual litany of stale promises of future savings/economic growth, etc., that boosters of government-mandated or subsidized activity are eager to deploy when the actual bills come due.
The bottom line is that one does not transition the world's largest economy from a robust, cheap source of power without dislocation, disruption and substantial cost. The only real question is, will the public agree to pay those costs, or will they balk and turn the green transition into the green bust?

You cannot label all electric power as green. It depends on how the electricity is generated. If solar panels or wind turbines are used to generate electricity, you could claim that electricity is “green”. If coal or fossil fuels are used, it is not “green”. Nuclear generation is “green” (as long as there are no accidents, otherwise its very, very environmentally damaging). The problem is that solar or wind generation is unpredictable and cannot be sustained. Coal, nuclear, and fossil fuels are sustainable, but have possible negative effects on the environment. As Hamlet says, “Aye, there’s the rub.”
“…Democrats who pushed through the new clean energy mandates now hitting customers in the wallet” are misleading nearly every one that these mandates are, in fact, clean.
Life cycle of these non fossil fuel burning energy systems typically create more pollution, take up way more land, are less reliable and create more waste at the end of the facilities’ life.
Where does the power come from to charge all these EV’s? Wind and solar have proven to be unreliable, expensive and dangerous to the wildlife. The answer is petroleum, coal and nuclear sources. So, how does this make us green energy users when we need fossil fuel and nuclear power? It is a scam to make these in power even richer with their insider trading schemes.
You guys in New York ought to take this out on your neighbors who voted for this moron woman who really wasn’t voted in, in the first place but then somehow you let her get elected again. What did you think these commies were going to do after you let them lock you down, kept you from going to church while all of the criminals were running wild having riots and protests, getting out of jail free, robbing convenience stores where the police arrest the owner for defending himself, and your state and local prosecutors are out of control persecuting the victims instead of the perpetrators.
