Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB) – In a warning to Russia, Trump said he’s ordering the repositioning of two U.S. nuclear submarines “based on the highly provocative statements” of the country’s former President Dmitry Medvedev.

Trump posted on his social media site that based on the “highly provocative statements” from Medvedev he had “ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”

The president added, “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what impact Trump’s order would have on U.S. nuclear subs, which are routinely on patrol in the world’s hotspots, but it comes at a delicate moment in the Trump administration’s relations with Moscow.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of today’s other top defense stories ending the week from conservative national security expert PAUL CRESPO.

Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEFING – the PDB:

NATIONAL SECURITY

DOD has scheduled its first major test of the multibillion-dollar Golden Dome missile defense system for just before the 2028 election, setting an aggressive deadline for military officials.

How are drones changing what it means to wage war and serve on the front lines?

HOMELAND SECURITY

ICE crackdown imperils Afghans who aided U.S. war effort.

Texas man indicted in killing of Afghan refugee who helped U.S. troops. The victim’s brother expressed frustration that it took more than three months.

Security forces at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base shot and killed a civilian who attempted to illegally enter the base in a car late at night.

Night vision goggles may have hampered Army helicopter pilots before deadly DC air crash. The pilots would’ve had difficulty spotting the plane while wearing the goggles.

Coast Guard Cutter offloaded nearly 10,000 pounds of confiscated cocaine worth $73.7 million at Port Everglades, Florida.

DEFENSE POLITICS

Defense Secretary Hegseth’s missteps has spurred infighting inside DOD and raised concerns among some Republicans on Capitol Hill about his ability to run the department.

Senators confirmed a flurry of senior military leadership posts, including the new Navy chief and the new head of Special Forces Command, amid a rush of confirmation votes.

In battle for House, Democrats are calling up military recruits. One candidate in Michigan would be the first Navy SEAL to serve in the House as a Democrat. Another Democrat in Arizona is a former Marine drill instructor seeking to be the first woman from the Marines to serve in the House. A third Democrat in New Jersey is a former Navy helicopter pilot.

US POWER OVERSEAS

Air Force has started moving 31 F-16 Fighting Falcons from southwestern South Korea to Osan Air Base as part of a plan to form a second “super squadron” closer to the border with North Korea.

IRAN THREAT/MIDDLE EAST

U.S. and Israeli officials float idea of ‘all or nothing’ Gaza deal. For months, Israel had focused on negotiating a two-phased deal for a 60-day cease-fire in Gaza and the release of some hostages, leaving discussions about a permanent end to the war for a later stage.

Israel’s support for clans in Gaza puts tribal strongman in spotlight. Yasser Abu Shabab is all over Israeli news and Palestinian social media.

The ouster of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria left a void in the regional narcotics trade. The Houthis are breaking into the drug trade.

CHINA THREAT

U.S. defense industrial base and all branches of the U.S. military depend heavily on materials produced by China to make and use critical weapon systems, creating national security risks, watchdog warns.

China teases first catapult launches from its first catapult-equipped aircraft carrier, the Fujian, if it has not done so already.

Chinese blockade could cut Taiwan’s electrical generating capacity so much that the island is unable to function, according to war games by a U.S. think tank.

For the first time, a Chinese submarine deployed to the waters off Russia for a five-day joint exercise between the two countries.

China alleges U.S. intelligence agencies launched cyberattacks on two Chinese military enterprises dating back to 2022, in one case exploiting a Microsoft zero-day flaw.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Vladimir Putin said that Russia has started production of its newest hypersonic missiles and reaffirmed its plans to deploy them to ally Belarus later this year.

Drone-dropped electric bikes save Ukrainian soldier trapped behind enemy lines. The soldier surrounded by Russians was recently saved in a robotic rescue effort.

Ukraine is set to receive its first two Patriot air defense systems from Germany “in the coming days” as part of the deal the U.S. government struck with NATO last month.

A Ukrainian lawmaker and other officials have been arrested after the country’s anti-corruption agencies uncovered what they call a large-scale bribery scheme for drone buys.

SPACE THREAT

Russia’s space chief has visited the U.S. to discuss plans for continued space cooperation between Moscow and Washington with NASA’s acting chief, the first such face-to-face meeting in more than seven years.

SECNAV on shipbuilding: ‘We have to get urgency into the system.’

Robot warships are here. Now the Navy needs to figure out how to use them. Unmanned ships give the Navy and other branches incredible capabilities on the water, no sailors necessary.

Military chaplaincy founded by George Washington marks 250 years of providing spiritual support to troops.

Army released a spirituality guide to help soldiers gauge their spiritual fitness, much like they would their physical fitness.

DOD has signed a record $3.5 billion contract with Raytheon to procure AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM), telemetry systems, spare parts and service. The biggest ever.

Space Force’s neighborhood watch-style initiative to share information with the private sector about threats to space assets will eventually grow to include classified intelligence.
