Tenants at a city-supervised affordable housing complex in the Bronx are blasting Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration after learning their rents will rise by more than 30% over the next four years despite the mayor’s campaign promises on affordability and rent freezes.
Residents of Tracey Towers, an 871-unit Mitchell-Lama development in Jerome Park serving middle- and moderate-income families, were told during a tense Wednesday meeting that their rents would increase beginning next year.
The announcement quickly triggered anger from tenants who said the hike directly contradicts the affordability message Mamdani used to.
Twenty-four years ago, America came under attack. Nearly 3,000 innocent lives were stolen on a clear Tuesday morning. Now, the 9/11 Legacy Foundation warns that memory is fading — and with it, the truth.
In classrooms, textbooks, and media coverage, the story of September 11th is vanishing. According to the 9/11 Legacy Foundation, some schools no longer teach it at all. In others, the attacks are reduced to a single sentence or skipped entirely. Major media outlets provide little more than a passing mention once a year. And perhaps most alarming, new polling suggests that 1 in 5 young Americans now view Osama bin Laden favorably.
“This isn’t just forgetting,” said Dr. Chris Meek, founder of the 9/11 Legacy Foundation. “It’s erasure — and we’re running out of time to stop it.”
A Mission to Preserve the Truth
Formed by survivors, family members, and responders, the 9/11 Legacy Foundation is sounding the alarm on what it sees as a national failure to uphold a simple promise: “We will never forget.” On this anniversary, the Foundation is asking Americans to recommit to that promise by making a donation to defend the memory — and legacy — of 9/11.
“Our mission is to preserve the truth while we still can,” said Meek. “We are losing survivors, responders, and eyewitnesses every year. If we don’t act now, their stories will be lost — and the facts will be replaced by distortion and denial.”
The Foundation’s work centers around six core pillars:
Fostering connections between Americans and the events of 9/11.
Commemorating milestones with the gravity they deserve — especially the upcoming 25th anniversary.
Instilling unity and patriotism by reflecting on shared sacrifice.
Defining what “We Remember” truly means, beyond a hashtag.
Educating future generations through 9/11 curriculum and school programs.
Curating personal stories of heroism, loss, and resilience.
“If We Stay Silent, the Promise Is Broken”
To date, the Foundation has supported the development of 9/11 education programs, hosted memorial events, and documented firsthand testimonies from those who lived through that day. But Meek says their ability to keep going depends entirely on public support.
“We have the survivors. We have the families. We have the truth,” he said. “But we can’t do this alone.”
As part of its 24th anniversary appeal, the Foundation is urging Americans to donate to its 9/11 Education Fund — a grant program that supports schools, universities, and organizations working to keep the story of September 11th alive.
“Every year, more young Americans grow up with no memory of that day. That’s not their fault,” said Meek. “It’s ours — if we fail to teach them.”
A Call to Action
As bells toll across the nation and loved ones gather at memorials in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, the Foundation is asking Americans to take more than a moment of silence.
“We need more than remembrance. We need action,” Meek said. “Make your gift. Support the mission. Preserve the truth while there’s still time.”
