With Roe Overturned, Abortions Hit Record Highs As DIY Abortion Pills Surge

Even with Roe v. Wade overturned and states allowed to again regulate abortions, the numbers of abortions committed in the U.S. continue to hit record highs – thanks to the use of do-it-yourself abortion pills, even in states that “ban” abortion.

The American Life League reports it is “pointing to the dramatic increase in non-medically supervised pill abortions, as marketed by online-only abortion facilities.”

“According to a new report by the Guttmacher Institute, released April 16, 2025, these DIY abortions increased by 40,000 between 2023 and 2024. That number does not include the estimated 34,500 chemical pill abortions provided to pregnant mothers by skirting the laws in states with abortion bans,” ALL reports.

“The new data released by the Guttmacher Institute confirms what we said in the fall of 2024. ‘Online-only clinics’ or in other words, the abortion pill drug cartel, account for 14% of all abortions,” said Katie Brown Xavios, American Life League’s national director

“But in the words of the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute themselves, this is only a small fraction of how many abortion pills are really crossing state lines. The rest are kept quiet because of shield laws. The true number is likely much closer to 50% or more. When will this madness end?,” said Xavois.

“These pills continue to cross our nation’s border into states with pro-life laws, with absolutely no regard for the women or babies involved. The reckless and dangerous distribution of these deadly pills only continues to rise, and so do the cases babies who were never given a chance and women who were murdered by these pills. This must end. When will our lawmakers start taking the dignity of human life seriously?,” Xavios concluded.

President Donald Trump has voiced support for federally-guaranteed access to DIY abortion pills. “The Supreme Court just approved the abortion pill and I agree with the decision to have done that,” Trump said in the first 2024 presidential debate. “And I will not block it.”

Vice President JD Vance also now supports do-it-yourself abortions, despite having previously supported legislation making them illegal.  When asked by Kristin Welker of “Meet The Press” Just to be clear. You support mifepristone (the abortion pill) being accessible?,” Vance responded “Yes, Kristen, I do,” reiterating support for Trump’s position.
