The search for a paddle boarder last seen alive in a pond adjacent to the Obama family's Martha's Vineyard estate is over.
Authorities retrieved the yet-to-be-identified Black male's body from the pond where he drowned.
Massachusetts State Police (MSP) reported the body was found in Edgartown Great Pond at 10 a.m. local time Monday at a depth of eight feet, approximately 100 feet from shore. MSP divers initiated a recovery operation after Massachusetts Environmental Police found the corpse using sonar technology.
“The investigation into the fatality is being conducted by the State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands District and Edgartown Police,” a spokesperson for the state police confirmed in a statement.
It's unclear whether the 911 call came from the Obama family residence or if anyone was home at the time.
The man's paddle board and hat were recovered Sunday evening after another paddle boarder saw him slip beneath the surface after struggling to remain afloat.
First responders were first alerted to the emergency at 7:40 p.m. Sunday. Several agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, were involved in the search.
