DNC Chair Ken Martin Says US And Iran Both ‘Kill Protesters,’ Sparking Firestorm

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Ken Martin is under fire today after drawing a provocative comparison between unrest in the United States and Iran’s brutal crackdown on nationwide protests — accusing both governments of “authoritarian behavior.”

In a flurry of posts on X, Martin compared demonstrations in Iran to protests in Minneapolis after Renee Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent. “From Tehran to my birthplace of Minneapolis, people are rising up against systems that wield violence without accountability,” Martin wrote, claiming both movements are battling state violence and impunity.

Martin escalated his criticism, accusing the Trump administration of “killing protesters, crushing dissent, and terrorizing communities,” and arguing that “authoritarian behavior” must be confronted everywhere — comments that sparked swift backlash online.

Critics blasted the comparison as inflammatory, arguing it collapses the difference between a democratic system with legal checks and a theocratic regime with a long record of violently crushing dissent.

Human rights groups say thousands have been killed in Iran as protests rage on. HRANA reported 2,677 deaths as of Friday, though other estimates are far higher and remain difficult to confirm.

Some claims put the toll as high as 20,000 protesters in just the past two weeks. Verified videos and witness accounts show security forces firing live ammunition at demonstrators, including shots to the head and chest.

A veteran Democratic strategist and former head of Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, Martin took over as chair of the DNC in early 2025. Since then, he’s positioned himself as one of the party’s fiercest critics of Donald Trump, as Democrats scramble to regroup following a devastating 2024 election.
