History-Making Lawmaker Pleads Guilty To Child Exploitation Charges

BOSTON — A former New Hampshire state representative once hailed as a political trailblazer has pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges in a disturbing child exploitation case involving images of young children.

Guilty Plea in Federal Court

Stacie-Marie Laughton, 41, admitted this week in U.S. District Court in Boston to charges of sexual exploitation of children. Prosecutors say she received and encouraged the exchange of sexually explicit images of children as young as 3, taken by her romantic partner, Lindsay Groves.

Groves, who worked at Creative Minds daycare in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, used her position to secretly photograph children under her care while they were in the bathroom. She then sent the images to Laughton via text message. Investigators say the two exchanged thousands of messages over several months, many of them graphic in nature.

Laughton not only accepted the images but also actively solicited them, according to court documents. The plea agreement includes full admission of guilt on all charges.

In one of their disturbing text exchanges, Laughton acknowledged to Groves that their actions were illegal but attempted to justify them. “I just don’t wanna get in trouble. I mean, I want to do what we want to do because we like it and we approve of it, but others think this is wrong. Lots of parents don’t like people touching their kids, and it is against the law,” Laughton wrote to Groves. (RELATED: Fox’s Tarlov Backtracks After ICE Suspect’s Child Abuse Allegations Emerge)

Severe Penalties Ahead

Each count carries a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison, fines up to $250,000, and a lifetime of supervised release. Laughton is currently being held in federal custody and will be sentenced in February.

Groves has also pleaded guilty in a related case and faces similar penalties. (RELATED: Colorado Bill Would Classify ‘Misgendering’ And ‘Deadnaming’ As Child Abuse)

From First to Felon

Laughton made national headlines in 2012 when she was elected as the first openly transgender state legislator in U.S. history, representing Nashua’s Ward 4. At the time, her win was seen as a milestone in LGBTQ+ political representation.

But her political career unraveled quickly. She resigned before being sworn in after past felony convictions — including credit card fraud and falsifying evidence — surfaced. In 2020, she returned to the New Hampshire House after another election victory but stepped down again in 2022 following arrests for stalking and violating a restraining order.

Public Reaction and Accountability Questions

The guilty plea has sparked outrage across New Hampshire and beyond, with federal officials highlighting the devastating breach of trust.

The case is also fueling renewed scrutiny over how candidates are vetted for public office, and whether identity politics have overshadowed concerns about character and criminal history.

Looking Ahead

Laughton is expected to be required to register as a sex offender. If released, she will face strict conditions under federal supervision. Civil lawsuits are expected from families of the victims, and state agencies are reviewing hiring practices and oversight procedures at the daycare where Groves worked.

Sentencing is set for February. If the court imposes the maximum penalties, Laughton could spend decades behind bars.

Supposedly we send our best and brightest to represent We The People as our duly elected leaders yet it seems that far too many of them are more graphic examples of flawed individuals than quality, and that does apply to both ‘parties’ although IMHO the lions share come from the left.
