Rep. Jasmine Crockett is drawing renewed scrutiny over remarks she made regarding the Karmelo Anthony murder case, with critics accusing the Texas Democrat of defending Anthony and unfairly targeting the victim, Austin Metcalf.

During Tuesday’s episode of her podcast, Crockett discussed Anthony’s conviction for the fatal stabbing of Metcalf at a Texas high school track meet and appeared to suggest she understood — and may have responded similarly to — Anthony’s actions during the confrontation.

The remarks quickly spread online, drawing criticism from conservatives, victims’ advocates, and social media users who accused the Texas Democrat of minimizing the killing of a 17-year-old student.

Case Captivated the Nation

The controversy comes one day after Anthony was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a rain-delayed track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.

According to prosecutors, the confrontation began after Anthony was asked to leave a team tent and escalated into a brief physical altercation. Witnesses testified that Anthony warned Metcalf not to touch him before pulling a pocket knife and stabbing the teenager in the chest.

Anthony’s legal team argued that he acted in self-defense and feared being attacked. Jurors were unconvinced, however, returning a guilty verdict after only a few hours of deliberation.

The jury also rejected a claim that Anthony acted under “sudden passion,” ultimately handing down a 35-year prison sentence. Under Texas law, he will be eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence.

Crockett’s Remarks Ignite Controversy

According to clips from the podcast highlighted by the New York Post, Crockett portrayed Anthony as a victim of circumstance and raised questions about the prosecution’s account of the fatal encounter. Critics also accused the congresswoman of misstating key facts of the case, including comments minimizing the size of the pocket knife used in the stabbing and questioning whether it could reasonably be considered a deadly weapon:

Crockett continued, flagrantly embellishing every single detail of the confrontation that led to the deadly stabbing.

“If a 300-pound man is beating me, like on top of me and beating me down, I’m not limited to fists,” she said, seemingly implying she too would have stabbed the high school athlete.

Metcalf was 6 feet and 200 pounds, a far cry from her claim about the victim’s stature.

Anthony was also a high school football standout — and was listed as 5 feet 11 and 162 pounds.

Critics further accused Crockett of reversing the roles of victim and aggressor in the confrontation, arguing her comments were inconsistent with testimony presented at trial.

One of the key witnesses, 18-year-old Eddie Parra, testified that Metcalf was attempting to remove someone who did not belong in the track team’s tent during the rain-delayed meet. Prosecutors maintained that what began as a dispute over the tent quickly escalated, culminating in Anthony fatally stabbing the teenager.

The congresswoman’s comments were especially controversial because they came less than 24 hours after Anthony was sentenced and after emotional victim-impact statements from Metcalf’s family, including his twin brother Hunter Metcalf.

Outside the courtroom, the case has remained highly polarizing, generating intense debate over self-defense claims, race, media coverage, and the public support Anthony received during the legal proceedings.

Political Fallout

Crockett, one of the Democratic Party’s most outspoken progressive voices, has frequently generated headlines with provocative remarks and confrontations involving Republican lawmakers and Trump administration officials. Her latest comments, however, risk opening a new line of criticism centered on crime and public safety issues.

As of Tuesday evening, Crockett had not publicly clarified or retracted the remarks that sparked the controversy.

The comments arrive at a time when Democrats nationally are already grappling with voter concerns about crime, law enforcement, and public safety — issues Republicans are expected to emphasize heavily heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
