Lizzo Praises Kamala Harris’ Detroit Vision – But Crime Stats Tell A Different Story

American rapper and singer Lizzo praised Vice President Harris at a campaign rally in Detroit on Saturday. The Grammy Award-winning performer clapped back at critics of the Democratic nominee, who claim that Harris intends to make the rest of America like Detroit. According to Lizzo, this would be a positive change. However, the response on social media and current crime statistics suggest otherwise.

According to recent analyses, Detroit is currently ranked as the second most dangerous city in the United States, based on factors like violent crime rates, home and community safety and financial stability. It ranks just behind Memphis in overall danger levels.

The findings come from evaluations that consider various safety indicators, such as assaults per capita and unemployment rates, where Detroit remains near the bottom.

MIRA Safety and other reports also highlight the city’s ongoing struggles with high rates of violent crimes, despite some efforts to address these issues.

As reported by the Detroit Free Press, Lizzo’s appearance coincided with the first day of early voting in the Motor City, which began on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 9 a.m.

After announcing that she had voted early for the Democratic ticket, Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, declared, “This is the swing state of all swing states, so every single vote here counts.”

Though the atmosphere appeared celebratory, several Democrats expressed concerns about the state of the race:

Some Harris supporters came to the event feeling more nervous than excited. Santiago-Romero, who represents majority-Hispanic Southwest Detroit on city council, told the Free Press she’s unsure Harris’ momentum was anything more than internet memes.

“There was no real momentum, it was excitement that came through social media, that came through messaging, but at the end of the day, memes don’t get you votes,” she said.

She’s noticed about four Trump signs in her neighborhood, but Santiago-Romero says, “In Southwest, people won’t show you with their signs, they’re going to show you with their votes.”

Harris is also expected to hold get-out-the-vote events in Georgia with former President Barack Obama on Oct. 24 and with Michelle Obama in Michigan on Oct. 26. While both campaigns have made pitches to Black men, Santiago-Romero said that she feels like the Harris campaign could do more to reach Spanish-speaking voters.

According to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average, former President Donald Trump leads Harris by 1.2 points in Michigan.
