North Carolina State Rep. Cecil Brockman (D-Guilford) was arrested Wednesday on multiple felony charges tied to alleged sexual crimes against a minor.
Brockman, 41, a six-term lawmaker, faces two counts each of statutory sexual offense with a child and indecent liberties with a child. The charges involve a 15-year-old and stem from alleged incidents that occurred around Aug. 15, 2025, according to the Associated Press.

A magistrate denied bond on Thursday, ruling that Brockman posed a flight risk and had attempted to contact the victim. The judge further accused him of trying to obtain the victim’s whereabouts during a hospital stay, even using his position of authority to access information protected under federal health privacy laws (HIPAA).
As NC Newsline reports, Democratic leaders joined Republican House Speaker Destin Hall in calling for Brockman’s immediate resignation:
The lawmaker’s legislative assistant declined to comment.
Democratic Gov. Josh Stein described the charges as “extremely serious and deeply troubling.”
“While the legal process has yet to play out, it’s clear he cannot effectively serve his constituents and should resign immediately,” Stein said in a statement.
House Democratic Leader Robert Reives (D-Chatham) initially issued a statement saying the charges, if true, would disqualify Brockman from public office.
As the morning unfolded and more details emerged, Reives issued a second statement. “As we continue to learn more about the allegations against Rep. Brockman this morning, it has become clear that he is unable to continue serving in the House of Representatives. Rep. Brockman must resign immediately,” he declared.
Brockman, a prominent figure in Guilford County politics, even has a youth center named in his honor. The Cecil Brockman Youth Academic Center — opened in 2023 by the High Point Housing Authority — serves children in public housing with educational programs.
