More details are emerging after multiple ballot boxes in the Portland, Oregon area were set ablaze earlier this week.
In both Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, fires early Monday morning damaged neighborhood ballot boxes, destroying an unknown number of ballots and raising new concerns about voter security. (RELATED: Early Morning Fire Damages Hundreds Of Ballots In Key Swing District)
Local news outlet KATU-TV reported that the last ballot retrieval occurred about 24 hours before the fire, suggesting that hundreds of ballots were lost. Witnesses indicate that only a small number of ballots were saved, raising concerns about the impact on election results. Authorities have not provided exact figures yet but are working to determine the full extent of the damage.
The words “Free Gaza,” were emblazoned on the devices that presumably caused the fires on Monday, an anonymous source within the Portland Police Department (PPD) told The New York Times. PPD confirmed that the incidents are connected but have yet to determine the motive.
“There was enough evidence collected at all three scenes that lead us to believe that all three incidents are connected, and we cannot get into more detail,” Mike Benner, spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau, said on Monday according to The New York Times.

A third device, which did not explode, was found at another ballot box in Vancouver, according to The New York Times. All three devices were sent to the Terrorist Explosive Device Analytical Center in Huntsville, Alabama, another PPD source told The New York Times.
In Portland, most of the ballots were undamaged due to the onboard fire suppression system. However, in Vancouver, hundreds of ballots were destroyed in the blaze.
People who believe their ballots may have been affected are being asked to request replacements through their local election office. Clark County, which includes Vancouver, will place observers at 22 ballot boxes around the clock for protection.

These ‘incidents’ showcase one of the biggest flaws in FORCED mail in voting, specifically how would a person know for sure that their ballot wasn’t destroyed? Sure doesn’t seem to be a recipe for ensuring a ‘safe and secure’ election process.

As I opined on another blog on this topic – what ‘better’ example of how insecure mail in ballots are. How can anyone NOT feel that their ballot ended up not getting counted? That would be true for any mailed ballot since the actual ballot might not be counted if it was cast for the ‘wrong’ candidate.
