MIAMI — A U.S. Secret Service officer is facing criminal charges after an arrest in Miami that officials say falls well short of the standards expected of those assigned to protect the nation’s top leaders.
Authorities identified the officer as John Spillman, 33, who was taken into custody Monday on a charge of indecent exposure. The arrest came hours after Spillman had been on duty providing exterior security screening for President Donald Trump during an appearance at the PGA Tour’s Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral.
Arrest and Allegations
According to Miami-Dade County jail records, Spillman was booked and held on a $1,000 bond. The Secret Service confirmed he has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of both the criminal case and an internal review.
The incident took place Sunday night at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Miami Airport & Convention Center. Police responded to reports of a man behaving erratically on the sixth floor, according to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
A woman told officers that Spillman followed her from the hotel lobby to her floor, prompting her to quickly enter her room out of concern for her safety. She later reported seeing him engaged in inappropriate behavior near her door.
Hotel security personnel who responded to the scene reported witnessing similar conduct, according to the report.
Agency Response
The Secret Service issued a swift response, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations.
Richard Macauley said the reported behavior is “unacceptable” and inconsistent with the standards expected of agency personnel.
“This agency takes these matters with the utmost seriousness,” Macauley said, adding that a full investigation is underway.
Broader Context
The arrest comes as the Secret Service faces increased scrutiny following a separate security incident more than a week earlier. In that case, authorities say a California man forced his way through a security checkpoint at a Washington hotel where Trump was attending an event and fired at an officer. The officer was protected by a ballistic vest, and the suspect now faces charges tied to an attempted assassination.
Officials stress the two incidents are not related. Still, they point to the range of challenges confronting the agency, from external threats to internal conduct.
