New York Judge Juan Merchan has delayed former President Donald Trump’s sentencing until after the election.
Shortly after 1 p.m. (EDT) Friday, Merchan postponed Trump’s Sept. 18 sentencing, moving it to Nov. 26, after the election. Merchan is overseeing the criminal case involving Trump related to the hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. The case stems from allegations that Trump orchestrated a payment to Daniels to prevent her from going public about an affair she claimed to have had with him, which Trump denies. The case involves accusations of falsifying business records, specifically regarding how the payments were documented. Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D). This case marked the first time in U.S. history that a former president faced criminal charges.
Judge Merchan also previously presided over other Trump Organization-related cases, including the tax fraud trial of the company’s former CFO, Allen Weisselberg.
