Chaos Erupts at Westwood Protest

A U-Haul truck drove into a crowd of anti-Iranian regime protesters Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles, injuring at least two people and triggering a chaotic confrontation before police detained the driver.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. in the Westwood neighborhood, near a federal building and in an area known for its large Iranian American community. Demonstrators had gathered in support of ongoing protests against Iran’s government.

Los Angeles police said the adult male driver was taken into custody pending further investigation. Authorities indicated charges related to attempted assault with a deadly weapon could be pursued.

Protest Targeted During Solidarity Rally

The rally was part of a broader wave of global demonstrations, where opposition to the country’s theocratic rulers has drawn international attention and, in Iran, sparked violent crackdowns.

In contrast, one sign on the U-Haul read: “No Shah. No Regime. USA: Don’t Repeat 1953. No Mullah,” referencing Iran’s monarchy-era history and U.S. involvement in a Cold War-era coup.

Los Angeles is home to one of the largest Iranian diaspora communities in the world and has seen multiple rallies tied to Iranian politics in recent weeks.

Driver Pulled From Vehicle After Crowd Confrontation

According to video footage shared on social media, the U-Haul truck sped through a tightly packed crowd, prompting screams as people scrambled out of the way. In one clip, a person can be seen clinging to the side of the vehicle and pounding on a window as it continues moving.

After the truck came to a stop, demonstrators surrounded it. One person climbed onto the vehicle and smashed the windshield, while others pushed flagpoles bearing Iranian flags through an open passenger-side window. Police officers then moved in and pulled the driver from the truck.

At least two people were treated by paramedics at the scene for minor injuries. Both declined further medical care.

Investigation Ongoing

The Los Angeles Police Department said the driver remains detained while investigators determine what led up to the collision. No motive has been publicly confirmed.

Officials have not said whether the incident is being investigated as politically motivated, but its timing has only intensified scrutiny.
