U.S. Sen. Bob Menedez (D-N.J.) and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, have been charged with bribery.
A federal grand jury in Manhattan had been investigating the couple over allegations three men facing bank fraud charges gave them gold bars worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for help.
Today’s charges come six years after another corruption trial against the senator ended in a hung jury.
The New York Times reports:
The indictment against Mr. Menendez, a 69-year-old Democrat who leads the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, follows a lengthy investigation by federal prosecutors in Manhattan and comes nearly six years after his trial on unrelated claims of corruption ended with a hung jury.
It has been known for some time that Mr. Menendez was under federal scrutiny, and he has said he was willing to assist investigators and was confident the matter would be “successfully closed.”
Representatives for Mr. Menendez could not immediately be reached for comment on the charges.
The indictment is almost certain to resound in Washington and in New Jersey.
Menedez has represented New Jersey in the United States Senate since 2006. Following the passing of Sen. Frank Lautenberg in 2013, he has been the Garden State’s senior senator.
