In their final conversation, Carton expressed her desire for a partner who shared her political and social values, saying, “I love you so much, but I’ve always wanted a partner to be on the same wavelength.” The emotional weight of that statement underscores the growing reality for many women: prioritizing their politics and social movements to the point that they’re willing to reject men they otherwise get along with.
Interestingly, Carton’s awakening to the significance of politics came after the election of Donald Trump and the killing of George Floyd in 2020, events that spurred many people, particularly women, to become more politically active.
