Netflix Dating Show Highlights Growing Phenomenon Of Liberal Women Struggling With Romance

In recent years, American politics has seen a growing polarization, and one of the most notable shifts has been the increasingly leftward movement of women. As women become more entrenched in progressive political ideologies, political affiliation has emerged as one of the greatest determinants of relationship compatibility, often surpassing traditional factors like religion, race, or even socioeconomic status. This dynamic is contributing to a significant shift in how people approach romance, with political beliefs playing an outsized role in determining romantic success. This is not only changing the way people form connections but also contributing to a growing trend of people staying single for longer.

A compelling example of this evolving trend was seen in the recent season of Netflix’s Love is Blind, where Sara Carton and Ben Mezzenga, despite having a strong emotional connection, ultimately did not marry. Carton rejected Mezzenga at the altar, citing concerns about their differing political and religious views. A pivotal moment in her decision-making came when Carton asked Mezzenga about his stance on Black Lives Matter, a question that revealed his lack of investment on social justice issues. Carton, who felt deeply connected to the Black Lives Matter movement and its significance, was put off by Mezzenga’s indifference. This conversation highlighted how political beliefs are now a critical part of romantic decision-making.

Fox News reports:

In Netflix’s “Love is Blind,” the men and women attempt to find their forever partner without ever seeing them. When the singles feel a strong connection, they propose and meet the other person for the first time face-to-face. Once a pair is engaged, they plan their wedding day while navigating the rocky waters of the outside world.

In the weeks between the engagement and the wedding, the couple usually moves in together, meets each other’s families, discusses finances and other issues. In that time, they decide whether or not they’ll say yes at the altar.

In their final conversation, Carton expressed her desire for a partner who shared her political and social values, saying, “I love you so much, but I’ve always wanted a partner to be on the same wavelength.” The emotional weight of that statement underscores the growing reality for many women: prioritizing their politics and social movements to the point that they’re willing to reject men they otherwise get along with.

Interestingly, Carton’s awakening to the significance of politics came after the election of Donald Trump and the killing of George Floyd in 2020, events that spurred many people, particularly women, to become more politically active. For Carton, political engagement became an essential part of her identity, and she sought a partner who shared this newfound sense of awareness and social responsibility. Mezzenga, on the other hand, was described as largely disinterested in politics, a stance that, despite his other positive qualities, rendered him incompatible with Carton in the long run.

Liberal women have long complained about their dating prospects, noting that traditionally masculine men often lean to the right and don’t have the same political passions. At last summer’s Democratic National Convention, an interview of a young woman in the audience went viral in which she expressed that sentiment, and during the same event, CNN panelists admitted that Democrats struggle appealing to conventionally masculine men.
