In a historic move, President Donald Trump is set to attend the 2025 Super Bowl in New Orleans, becoming the first sitting commander in chief to attend the nation’s biggest annual sporting event. The announcement has stirred excitement and anticipation, with Trump’s attendance set to elevate the spectacle of the game, which will take place at the iconic Caesars Superdome.
Sources confirmed the news to The Post on Tuesday, with federal law enforcement officials acknowledging that President Trump’s participation will require additional security measures across the city. His attendance comes just 39 days after a tragic ISIS-inspired attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, which killed 14 and injured several others. Extra precautions are expected to ensure the safety of the president and those attending the game.
While details surrounding his full entourage are still being finalized, sources have indicated that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem are expected to join the president for the event. Trump is also set to record an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, which will air on the Fox pregame show just before the highly anticipated game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
During an appearance in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump hinted at his thoughts on the game, saying, “I don’t want to say, but there’s a certain quarterback that seems to be a pretty good winner,” likely referencing Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Despite the subtle comment, it remains unclear whether Trump will openly root for either team. Given his victory in both Missouri and Pennsylvania in the 2024 election, he may refrain from making a choice.
Trump’s attendance marks a milestone in Super Bowl history. While former vice presidents have attended the game, including Spiro Agnew, George H.W. Bush, Al Gore, and Mike Pence, no sitting president has ever been present for the big game. This tradition was last broken when President George H.W. Bush participated in the coin toss during Super Bowl XXXVI as a former president in New Orleans.
Additionally, Taylor Swift will be in attendance as she’s dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, potentially adding another layer to the event. Swift has been vocal in her political activism, previously urging voters to reject Trump in the past election.
Trump’s presence at high profile sporting events has been known to make waves. During the 2024 presidential race, both Tim Walz and Donald Trump attended college football games the same weekend, with Trump joining the University of Alabama vs University of Georgia and Walz joining the University of Michigan vs. the University of Minnesota. While the crowd went wild for Trump, erupting in thunderous applause, cheers, and USA chants when Trump was shown on the Jumbotron, Walz was repeatedly booed and heckled and at one point appeared to flip the bird at the attendees.
Following Trump’s reelection, college and professional football players began celebrating victories and touch downs by doing the “Trump dance,” imitating the president’s well known routine to “YMCA.”
