Following the conclusion of Tuesday night’s presidential debate, pop superstar Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election, citing concerns over artificial intelligence and misinformation. In an Instagram post, Swift explained that a recent AI-generated video falsely portraying her support for Donald Trump had prompted her to speak out.

“Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” Swift wrote. “The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”

Swift announced that she would be casting her vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, emphasizing the importance of being transparent about her political plans.

Swift’s History of Political Influence

This is not the first time Swift has used her platform to influence political outcomes. In 2018, after she endorsed Democrat Phil Bredesen in Tennessee’s Senate race, vote.org credited her with boosting young voter registration and turnout. Although Bredesen lost the race, Swift’s political influence has only grown since then, particularly among her fan base of young women.

Swift’s endorsement of Harris could be impactful in swing states, where young, white women make up a significant portion of the electorate.

Encouraging Voter Registration

Swift concluded her post by encouraging her fans to check their voter registration and vote early. “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make,” she wrote, linking to resources for registering and finding early voting information.

In a lighthearted nod to Trump’s running mate, Swift signed her message “Childless Cat Lady,” referencing a comment made by J.D. Vance in 2021, which Democrats have frequently used to rally female voters.

The photo accompanying her post showed her holding her pet cat, Ragdoll.
