President Donald Trump is scrapping the planned Freedom 250 concert series in Washington, D.C., and replacing it with what he promises will be a massive patriotic rally after several scheduled performers withdrew from the event.
The rally, set for June 24 on the National Mall, will serve as part of the broader Freedom 250 celebration marking America’s 250th anniversary and will feature military bands, patriotic music, and a speech from Trump himself.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump mocked the performers who dropped out and declared that the revised event would be “the Greatest Rally, EVER!”
“We don’t want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep, we’ve told them all to stay home,” Trump wrote. “All we want is you, me, a few speakers, and the Greatest Music ever played.”
The president outlined a lineup featuring patriotic performers and military ensembles rather than mainstream recording artists.
Country music star Lee Greenwood is expected to introduce Trump by performing his signature anthem, “God Bless the U.S.A.,” while tenor Christopher Macchio will perform a series of patriotic and classical selections including “Nessun Dorma,” “Hallelujah,” “Ave Maria,” and “God Bless America.”
Trump praised Macchio in particularly glowing terms, declaring that “not since the legendary Luciano Pavarotti has there been such a voice.”
The event will also feature performances by the U.S. Army Band, the U.S. Marine Band, the Armed Forces Choir, and the Joint Armed Forces Chorus.
The president jokingly added that attendees would also hear from “a fine and highly dignified gentleman known as President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Artists Exit Amid Political Controversy
The rally announcement follows a wave of withdrawals from the original Freedom 250 Presents: The Great American State Fair concert series, which had been scheduled to begin June 25 on the National Mall.
Several artists who were initially booked for the event later backed out after learning more about its “connections” to the Trump administration.
Among those who withdrew were Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Young MC, Morris Day and The Time, and the Commodores.
Many of the artists argued that the event had been presented to them as a nonpartisan celebration of America’s 250th anniversary but later appeared more closely associated with Trump and his political movement than they had initially understood.
The controversy largely centered on Freedom 250 itself. While the organization was created through an executive order signed by Trump in January to oversee semiquincentennial celebrations, critics argued that the group had become closely identified with the president and his political brand. Several performers said they were uncomfortable appearing at an event that many members of the public viewed as effectively Trump-backed, regardless of its official mission.
McBride said she had been told the event would be a nonpartisan celebration of all 50 states before concluding that it no longer aligned with her understanding of the project.
Michaels similarly said the event had evolved into something “much more divisive” than what had originally been presented to his team.
Freedom 250 Continues Despite Setbacks
The artist departures represent an embarrassing setback for organizers of the Great American State Fair, which was envisioned as one of the centerpiece celebrations of the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday.
The organization remains responsible for a range of planned events, including the Freedom 250 Grand Prix and other nationwide celebrations.
Rather than attempting to replace the departed performers with a slew of new headline acts, Trump appears to be embracing a format showcasing military musicians, traditional American songs, and his own appearance.
For supporters, the shift may reinforce the event’s focus on patriotism and national pride. Critics, meanwhile, are likely to see it as further evidence that what was advertised as a broad national celebration has become increasingly identified with Trump himself.
Either way, the president is betting that a rally featuring patriotic music, military performers, and a prime-time speech from him will prove more appealing than the concert lineup that ultimately fell apart.
“We will be bringing you, LIVE, the Greatest Rally, EVER!” Trump promised.
