Gen. Thomas A. Bussiere, the four-star officer responsible for providing combat-ready forces for strategic nuclear deterrence and global strike operations for combatant commanders, has resigned — officially for “personal and family reasons.”

Bussiere had led Air Force Global Strike Command, a major command of the U.S. Air Force, since late 2022. In July, President Trump nominated him to become vice chief of staff of the Air Force, but the nomination was quietly withdrawn in September. Now, he has stepped down entirely.

As The Hill reports:

“After much reflection and with a full heart, Barb and I have made a difficult decision to request retirement from the United States Air Force for personal and family reasons,” Bussiere, the head of Air Force Global Strike Command, said in a post on Facebook.

“While I’m stepping away from active duty, my commitment to service remains. I look forward to finding new ways to support our Air Force, our national defense and the incredible people who make it all possible,” wrote Bussiere, who was nominated by the Trump administration to be the Air Force’s vice chief of staff over the summer.

The announcement came just hours after President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told military leaders at Quantico to prepare for potential domestic interventions and railed against woke ideology.

Hegseth’s tone grew sharper as he addressed the room filled with generals and admirals: “If the words I’m speaking today are making your heart sink, then you should do the honorable thing and resign.”

While critics quickly drew connections online, no concrete evidence has emerged tying the two events together.

Bussiere’s career included combat missions in multiple theaters, flying F-15C sorties during Operations Southern Watch and Vigilant Warrior and B-2 missions in Operations Allied Force and Iraqi Freedom.

He commanded units including the 325th Bomb Squadron, 13th Bomb Squadron, 509th Operations Group, and the 509th Bomb Wing.

From 2020 to 2022, Bussiere served as deputy commander of U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. In December 2022, he was promoted to four-star general and assumed command of Air Force Global Strike Command, while also serving as commander of Air Forces Strategic–Air under U.S. Strategic Command.

Some observers view Bussiere’s departure as a routine retirement. However, many conservative commentators have framed it as evidence that Trump is successfully thinning the ranks of commanders perceived as resistant as he reshapes the military.

Unfortunate, maybe, but only he and DJT know for sure. Regardless, we need only America First Commanders to serve and protect the United States of America!
