The Pentagon's former defense secretaries and top generals warned Tuesday that political polarization and other societal strains are creating an “exceptionally challenging” environment for maintaining the traditional relationship between the military and civilian worlds.

HOMELAND SECURITY

THIS ‘ANTI-HATE GROUP' IS A BIASED, LEFTIST HATE GROUP ITSELF – DEFENDING WESTERN VALUES ISN'T EXTREMISM – An accused nationalist is serving in the Montana Guard despite efforts against extremism. A former Montana political candidate long accused by a major anti-hate group of pushing white nationalist views was commissioned into the Montana National Guard as a new infantry officer in 2020 and is still in the service.

THREAT

Kremlin says Putin attends military exercises with Chinese forces. The Vostok-2022 military exercises continue a series of war games involving Russian and Chinese forces in recent years.

India launches new aircraft carrier as China concerns grow. India commissioned its first home-built aircraft carrier Friday as it seeks to counter regional rival China's much larger and growing fleet and expand its own indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

POT CALLING KETTLE BLACK – China accuses US of cyberattacks on university that allegedly does military research. China on Monday accused Washington of breaking into computers at a university that U.S. officials say does military research, adding to complaints by both governments of rampant online spying against each other.

THREAT – WAR

ROLE REVERSAL – Russia to buy rockets, artillery shells from North Korea. The Russian Ministry of Defense is in the process of purchasing millions of rockets and artillery shells from North Korea for its ongoing fight in Ukraine, according to a newly downgraded U.S. intelligence finding.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 195. The International Atomic Energy Agency is due to issue a report on the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, in southern Ukraine, and brief the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday.

PROGRESS – Zelenskiy says Ukraine takes three settlements in south, east. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday marked progress in a counter-offensive Ukraine that began last week, thanking his forces for taking two settlements in the south, a third in the east, as well as additional territory in the east of the country.

THREAT

Iran briefly seizes 2 US Navy sea drones in Red Sea amid tensions. Iran's navy seized two American sea drones in the Red Sea before letting them go Friday after U.S. destroyers and helicopters responded, officials said.

US B-52 bombers fly over Middle East amid tensions with Iran. The bombers took off from the Royal Air Force base at Fairford, England, and flew over the eastern Mediterranean, the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Liz Truss to replace Boris Johnson as next UK prime minister. Strongly pro- Conservative will become the next prime minister of Britain, taking over from Boris Johnson at a time of economic peril and political upheaval in the United Kingdom.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

IS IT VA OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S JOB? SHOULD TAXPAYERS PAY FOR THIS? VA to provide abortions in cases of rape, danger to ‘veteran's' (MOTHER'S) health. The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to offer access to veterans and eligible dependents in cases of rape, incest and pregnancies that endanger the life or health of an individual, arguing the change is needed after more than two dozen states banned the procedure this summer.

AMERICAN YOUTH TOO FAT, LAZY, AND CRAZY TO SERVE- ‘This is an American problem': Army officer says as branch hopes program will help with lagging recruitment. The “American problem” of dwindling interest in military service or fitness to enlist has Army recruitment numbers lagging. But a high-ranking Army official in Washington state is optimistic the nation's young people still see value in serving.
