Mitch McConnell, the former Senate Republican leader from Kentucky, has delivered one of the starkest warnings from either party about Donald Trump’s second term, describing it as “the most dangerous period since before the Second World War.”
In a candid interview with the Lexington Herald-Leader, McConnell sounded the alarm on rising isolationism, trade protectionism, and what he sees as a growing threat from authoritarian regimes. He drew comparisons between today’s climate and the 1930s — a decade marked by economic turmoil, weak Western leadership, and the rise of totalitarian powers.
After helping deliver a record number of conservative judges and reluctantly endorsing Trump’s reelection, McConnell is now openly voicing concern over the path he believes both the GOP and the country are taking with Trump back in charge at the White House.
He specifically criticized “America First” trade policies, comparing them to the isolationist approach that many historians say helped set the stage for World War II. Tariffs and retreating from global leadership, McConnell warned, would leave America more vulnerable, not stronger.
He pointed to Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea as increasingly aggressive adversaries and said the U.S. isn’t doing enough to counter them.
Speaking about the war in Ukraine, McConnell didn’t mince words: If America pulls back, the outcome is clear — “Russia wins, America loses.” And that, he warned, would have global consequences.
The Hill has more on the longtime Senate majority leader’s remarks:
“There’s certain similarities right now to the ‘30s,” he continued, pointing to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which he said is “widely believed by historians and economists to have taken the depression worldwide.”
President Trump has similarly issued sweeping tariffs on many U.S. allies and close trading partners. He has done so in an effort to strike what he views as better deals for America to offset trade imbalances. Members of his administration have also touted the revenue generated by the tariffs, which American consumers of foreign products pay.
…
“Those who were totally anxious to stay out of all of what was going on in Europe were called ‘America First.’ Sound familiar? So, what do we have today? North Korea, China, Russia, Iran and Iran’s proxies. They’re very different kinds of countries, but they have one thing in common: They hate us,” McConnell said. “So, when you talk about preparedness, we’re not prepared like we should be.”
While McConnell held back from directly attacking Trump, his message was unmistakable: the stakes couldn’t be higher, and the dangers of turning inward are real. A warning that is especially notable coming from a veteran Republican heavyweight.
The longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, McConnell stepped down from his leadership role in January 2025 and announced on his 83rd birthday that he will not seek reelection in 2026.

RINO
How would McConnell know about Pre- WW2. He was only a child in those days.
President Trump is doing just fine trying to carry out his agenda to satisfy those who voted for him and his agenda.
McConnell is an idiot who is trying to appease his colleges in the democrat party. He is no less than a RINO in sheep’s clothing.
He really does need to bow out and let another take his place. He has the Joe Biden incompetent disease due to his overstay in the Senate.
I wonder if he is preparing his “crow pie” so when President Trump brings back our economy and energy policies, and stabilizes our republic.
McConnell has grossly misinterpreted the sociopolitical climate in our nation. It is closer to pre civil war events when the democrats were also preparing for military actions against the union to protect the serfdom climate of plantation owners. They were the oligarchs of the time violently opposing everything president Lincoln was trying to accomplish as they beat and murdered their black and white slaves. McConnell is another stereotypical hypocrite and prevaricator that should have long ago been prosecuted for his activities.
