Message To China: US Running ‘Largest-Ever’ Military Drills In Pacific

FRIDAY – Barack Obama's ‘Pivot to Asia' is finally here. It really got moving under Donald but has been growing since.

As the largest-ever version of the joint military exercise known as Talisman Sabre nears its end this week, the Army has seen its own set of firsts that have converged in two specific units the service sees as leading its future approach to warfighting.

These new units take center stage in massive Pacific exercise.

MEANWHILE – Sprawling Pacific exercise revealed Air Force needs some doctrine ‘refresh.' Following the Air Mobility Command's (AMC) largest readiness exercise in its history held for the first time in the Indo-Pacific, officials are starting to unpack lessons learned, with the need to better coordinate logistics forces being at the top of the list.

AND LET'S NOT FORGET – US nuclear submarine visits Western Australia as allies increase defense preparedness. The nuke sub arrived on Friday as allies Canberra and Washington deepen defense ties and prepare to transfer nuclear submarine capability to Australia.

Wagner fighters seek to unsettle NATO's eastern flank, Polish PM says. Wagner soldiers have begun training with the national army, prompting Poland to start moving more than 1,000 troops closer to the border. On Tuesday it accused Belarus of violating its airspace with military helicopters.

2 US military veterans killed in Ukraine during intense fighting. The two men were killed while helping their teammates maneuver.

Russia doubles 2023 defense spending plan as war costs soar. Its new defense spending target is more than $100 billion – a third of all public expenditure – as the costs of the war in Ukraine spiral and place growing strain on Moscow's finances.

HOMELAND SECURITY

Iowa governor taps COVID funds to send troops to Mexico border. Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) is the latest GOP state leader to send National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, deploying 109 Guardsmen to Wednesday.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Marine guards remain at US embassy in Niger amid partial evacuation. The Marines will remain there as the U.S. evacuates all but essential staff because of a coup in the country.

Ethiopia declares state of emergency following militia clashes. The clashes are in the Amhara region between the military and local Fano militiamen.

Lebanon warns army may intervene if Palestinian faction clashes continue. Prime Minister Mikati told Palestinian President Abbas the clashes were a ‘flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty.'

US MILITARY

Marine Corps now has unit in Indo-Pacific flying Reaper drones. A Marine squadron has become the only Marine unit in the Indo-Pacific to reach an early operational milestone with MQ-9 Reaper drones.

US Air Force eyes advance procurement to more quickly make E-7 planes. With pressure to field its upcoming fleet of E-7A ‘AWACS' battlefield management aircraft as quickly as possible, the service is leaning heavily on advance procurement.
