HOMELAND DEFENSE

How NORAD plans to ward off cruise missiles fired at the US. The command has goals for 2025 and 2030 but wants more guidance from the Pentagon.

Bill would prod Pentagon to accelerate fielding of new tech to defeat drone swarms. Legislation calls for the Pentagon to develop a new strategy to counter swarms of unmanned aerial systems.

HOMELAND SECURITY

THAT'S NEW – US Coast Guard, CBP seize 20,000 pounds of khat at Port of Seattle. Marijuana, cocaine, fentanyl and heroin are common enough, but only occasionally do border control agents in the United States pick up a shipment of the Middle Eastern stimulant drug.

CHINA THREAT

Nancy Pelosi may travel to Taiwan on a military plane, raising concerns about how China might react. China views Taiwan as a renegade province and some have raised concerns that now is not the time for Pelosi to visit.

Taiwan holds drills amid Pelosi visit concern, China tension. There was no direct link between China's threats and Taiwan's civil defense drills.

National Guard considering major expansion in Indo-Pacific. The National Guard is considering a sizable expansion of training programs with Indo-Pacific nations to amplify U.S. presence there, its top general said Monday.

RUSSIA THREAT

Russia says it wants to end Ukraine's `unacceptable regime.' Russia's top diplomat said Moscow's overarching goal in Ukraine is to free its people from its “unacceptable regime,” expressing the Kremlin's war aims in some of the bluntest terms yet as its forces pummel the country with artillery barrages and airstrikes.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 153. Russian air attacks have intensified in the Donetsk region, officials said, hitting the cities of Bakhmut, Kramatorsk, Chasiv Yar, Sloviansk and Kostyantynivka, as well as surrounding villages. Rescuers continue to search under the rubble for three more survivors in an arts and leisure center in Chuhuiv, 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Kharkiv, after Russian troops fired at least 10 rockets were fired at the town.

Russia strikes school, civilian buildings as it presses Ukraine bombardment. Russian strikes continued in Ukraine as the Kremlin called on Kyiv to resume shipments of grain despite a Russian missile attack over the weekend that risked derailing a key deal aimed at easing a blockade on Ukraine's ports.

Ukraine says it has destroyed 50 Russian ammunition depots using HIMARS. Ukraine said on Monday its forces had used U.S-supplied HIMARS rocket systems to destroy 50 Russian ammunition depots since receiving the weapons last month.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

US Army helicopters hold first live-fire drills in South Korea since 2019. US Army Apache attack helicopters based in South Korea are holding live-fire drills with rockets and guns for the first time since 2019, as the allies step up military exercises amid tension with North Korea.

IRAN THREAT

Iran will keep IAEA cameras turned off until nuclear deal is restored. The United States on Monday condemned the execution of political activists and elected officials in Myanmar and called the military government to immediately cease the violence.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Pentagon reviews removing Morocco as host of largest military exercise in Africa. The Defense Department is looking at alternative locations for the largest military exercise in Africa amid Senate pressure to bump Morocco from its position as an annual host for the drills.

SECDEF Austin heads to SOUTHCOM, Brazil to push US priorities in a neglected region. The conference agenda includes discussions on cybersecurity; humanitarian assistance and disaster relief; the role of women, peace, and security; and migration.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

The Army is pushing the limits of bridging ops as Ukraine's fight spotlights river crossings. Russia suffered an embarrassing public setback in Ukraine's Donbas region in May when its soldiers attempted to cross the Siverskyi Donets River and ended up taking a bath instead – reportedly losing a significant number of troops and tanks in the process. The U.S. Army, which coolly called out the failure not long after, is a recognized leader in proficient “wet gap” crossings.
