Crime is on the rise in the State of Washington. However, a law restricting police pursuits keeps authorities from doing everything they can to fight it.
Thanks to Democrats in Olympia and Gov. Jay Inslee (D), police have lost most of their ability to pursue fleeing suspects. Even when they think they have their suspect who refuses to pull over. The bill, which sailed through the state legislature, also limits the use of less-lethal weapons and forbids chokeholds and neck restraints.
The result: Washington State Patrol has confirmed over 1,000 drivers have ignored flashing lights from troopers in their rearview mirrors. A suspect driving on a suspended license even called 911 and told the dispatcher to call off the chase. Things got worse earlier this month.
Deputies outside Spokane watched with mounting frustration as a burglary suspect they couldn’t pursue careened into a local lumberyard. He fled the scene.
The Center Square reports:
“This law is exceptionally frustrating to deputies and to the victim,” said Spokane County Undersheriff John Nowels. “The rule of law is the bedrock of a civil society, and this policy is empowering people to disobey the law.”
Commercial burglaries in Spokane County, the state’s fourth-most populous, have gone up 31% since last year. Home break-ins have increased by 15%.
More alarming, said Nowels, is that vehicle thefts are up 55%, following a statewide trend.
To date in 2022, he said there have been 618 car thefts in the county, a number that already exceeds the total of 426 in 2021.
“We are putting effort into identifying suspects and tracking them, but if they get into a car and take off, we are not allowed to chase them,” said Nowels.
Nowels added that the flagrant disregard for the rule of law provides yet another example of how the state legislature, regardless of its intentions, has failed the people of Washington.

Looks like Washington state legal system has been taken over by the ultra liberal groups who are adding to our legal problems by not protecting law abiding citizens who are being raped, and attacked, and stolen from because the legal system in their states are being run by those who want our democracy to be destroyed by the gustapos and those communist in our midst.
Every law enforcement officer in the state should just quit and leave that screwed up liberal state. What their shortsightedness results in is that it just passes the infection up the chain, and then it later bites everyone in the ass, including the morons who first thought they were getting rid of their problem. Making innocuous comments like “Senators do not have the authority to release criminals” only serves to justify your naivety and ignorance regarding how irresponsible local policies become state or federal policies that affect the entire nation.

As a retired Washington State Trooper working out of Spokane, I would be applying for another law enforcement position in a different state.
I don’t understand why the rich insurance companies are not suing the government agencies responsible for this. I guess it is much easier to raise the victims rates instead, and support their reelection. They alwaws get theirs I guess.
