Russia and China Deepen Complicated Relationship

China has officially embraced Xi Jinping as the new Mao – a president for life who prizes loyalty above merit and security above markets.

That makes the world a little less secure and a lot more uncertain. But it also makes clear China isn’t the market-friendly place many in the west long assumed. If anything, it’s taking a great leap backward toward personalized, authoritarian rule. (RELATED: Foreign Leader Facing Imminent Disaster Thanks to Remarkable Ineptitude)

And there’s no greater tell of how big the move is than the gushing note Russian strongman Vladimir Putin sent Xi:

The outcome from the party congress “confirmed your high political authority, as well as the unity of the party you lead,” Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote on the social media and messaging app Telegram, according to Russian state media, referring to Mr. Xi.

Recall that Russia has turned to China for moral, political, economic and military support for its ill-fated invasion of Ukraine. China has been less than enthusiastic about that partnership since Ukraine – with Western military aid – has pushed Putin back on several fronts.

But if the relationship continues and Putin certainly hopes it does, Russia will remain the junior partner, reliant on Xi’s continued goodwill, and Russia’s compliance through trade and other concessions, to keep the alliance alive. Because Mr. Xi, like Mao before him, doesn’t share power and most certainly doesn’t trust Russia. Though Xi may need Russia and Putin if he is to fulfill his imperial designs.     Right, Norman. And America has foolishly lapsed in American know-how and production to the point that almost everything in this land, including some technology for election monitoring and defense, is manufactured in CHINA. This is potentially as catastrophic as Merkel’s Germany becoming totally dependent on Russia for energy.
