Trump And DeSantis Duel Over Military Policies

TUESDAY – Trump and DeSantis debut dueling military policies Gov. Ron DeSantis's presidential campaign and former President Trump this week rolled out dueling plans for the U.S. military, with both light on details and heavy on gripes over Biden efforts.

While DeSantis's proposal took at diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the Pentagon, recruiting woes and policies impacting transgender service members, Trump's proposition focused largely on seeking reimbursements for U.S. aid to , lambasting Europe for what he decried as only a “tiny fraction” of what Washington had contributed.

(NOTE – Europe has provided far more than a “tiny fraction.”)

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

NORTH KOREA THREAT

North Korea fires 2 missiles after US submarine arrives in South Korea. The launches came hours after South Korea's navy said the USS Annapolis arrived at a port on Jeju Island.

SPACE THREAT

Pentagon emphasizes ‘responsible' options for countering space weapons. China and Russia have ramped up testing of advanced space weaponry in recent years and experts call for U.S. to develop more offensive capabilities of its own for a potential conflict in orbit. 

First STARCOM ‘orbital warfare' exercise delayed towards end of year. The Red Skies exercise will focus on “mission planning and execution using orbital warfare modeling and simulation techniques” rather than actual live training.

Space Force plans to ‘guarantee' future launch missions with 3 providers faces challenge. While Space Systems Command hasn't publicly expressed concerns, it's highly likely that only 's SpaceX will be able to conduct National Security Space Launches in next few years.

HOMELAND SECURITY

Mystery company buys $800M worth of land near Travis AFB, raising concerns about national security. The Air Force is investigating a company that's purchased $800 million of land near Travis Air Force Base, one of the most critical military bases in the U.S. But after eight months, officials have been unable to identify who's behind it. INTERNATIONAL SECURITY 

US military is still confronting Russian pilots over Syria. “It's a game of poker, and the ante is going up.”

Japan, South Korea fire missiles in Australia for first time. The missile and rocket launches were part of a multinational military exercise also involving the U.S.

Japan, Italy to conduct joint air drill in Sea of Japan. They will hold a joint fighter jet drill between Aug 2-10, Japan's Air Self-Defence Force (ASDF). This, a week after it announced a similar exercise with the French air force.

As Israel's air force reservists join protests, country faces potential turning point. Israeli lawmakers passed a key part of the controversial reform package Sunday, as protest spread among military reservists.

AU international military students visit DC, gain US government, military perspectives. Foreign students at the Air Command and Staff College class spent several days in the nation's capital to better understand the U.S federal and U.S. military.

US MILITARY

It's all about logistics: US Marines test Force Design in Pacific. A Marine Corps unit spent seven months in the Indo-Pacific testing the service's warfighting modernization effort, offering a glimpse at what future operations in the region might look like. 

WHY? – Air Force dropping ‘vice' commander title; now it's ‘deputy.' The Air Force is switching up how it refers to No. 2 officers for most of its organizations, moving away from the longstanding “vice commander” title to “deputy commander” at all levels.
