A dangerous flashpoint just erupted in the Arabian Sea.
The U.S. military says it shot down an Iranian drone that was rapidly approaching the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln — an incident CENTCOM described as an aggressive move with “unclear intent.”
A Navy F-35C launched from the Lincoln strike group engaged and destroyed the Iranian Shahed-139 drone about 500 miles off Iran’s southern coast, even after U.S. forces attempted de-escalation.
No Americans were hurt, and the carrier was not damaged.
But the confrontation didn’t stop there.
Despite attempts to deescalate, the drone continued flying in the direction of the Lincoln “aggressively” and with “unclear intent,” resulting in its shoot down by the F-35C, according to officials with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) who spoke to CBS News.

At roughly the same time, the military said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps harassed a U.S.-flagged, U.S.-crewed merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. Two small boats and an Iranian Mohajer drone reportedly approached the ship at high speed and threatened to board before disengaging.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened military action against Iran in recent weeks, while maintaining that he prefers a diplomatic solution and a new nuclear agreement.
A large U.S. naval force led by the Lincoln strike group and accompanied by three destroyers is currently positioned in the Arabian Sea within striking distance of Iran.
Trump recently reiterated that he “hopes” to avoid using force but warned that “bad things” will happen if Iran does not negotiate. He outlined two conditions for avoiding strikes: Iran abandoning its nuclear program and ending violent crackdowns on domestic protests.
Iran says it’s open to nuclear talks — but only on its terms, insisting its military and defense programs are off-limits.
At the same time, activists and human rights groups warn that Tehran’s brutal crackdown on the massive protests that erupted in late December 2025 has entered a darker new phase.
While street demonstrations have largely been crushed, reports suggest repression has moved behind closed doors — into prisons and even hospitals. Some families and medical workers claim security forces have stormed medical facilities to seize wounded protesters, with horrifying allegations that some victims were summarily executed while receiving treatment.
Australia and the United Kingdom issued new sanctions Tuesday targeting Iranian security officials for what they described as “horrific use of violence.”
