NATIONAL SECURITY

TRUE AND SERIOUS – America's military faces a ‘window of maximum danger.' Marine turned lawmaker Mike Gallagher warns that the U.S. is far more vulnerable to losing a war than the public recognizes.

GOOD OR MISGUIDED? – New Biden counterterror strategy puts limits on drone use. President on Friday formally issued new guidance curtailing the use of armed drones outside of war zones as part of a new counterterrorism strategy that places a greater priority on protecting civilian lives.

White House Arctic strategy calls for enhanced military presence. The White House on Friday released a 10-year Arctic strategy that emphasizes deterring increased Russian and Chinese activity in the region as global warming rapidly melts the polar ice caps, drastically transforming the environment.

CHINA THREAT

Taiwan says war with China ‘absolutely' not an option, but bolstering defences. War between Taiwan and China is “absolutely not an option”, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on Monday, as she reiterated her willingness to talk to Beijing and also pledged to boost the island's defences including with precision missiles. China again rejected her latest overture, saying the island was an inseparable part of its territory.

DoD inks waiver for deliveries of F-35s, halted over Chinese material. The Pentagon has approved a waiver that would allow Lockheed Martin to resume F-35 deliveries that were halted over the discovery of an alloy made using unapproved materials from China.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 229. Missile attacks on “many” Ukrainian cities including the capital Kyiv left people dead and wounded, the country's presidency said on Monday.

MAYBE ‘ONE' WOULDN'T – A FEW MIGHT – A tactical Russian nuke wouldn't confer much battlefield advantage, experts say. But the environmental and effects would be enormous and long-lasting.

Russia unleashes deadly strikes on cities across Ukraine after Crimea bridge attack. The blasts came hours after President accused Kyiv of “terrorism” after the bridge connecting Russia and annexed Crimea was severely damaged in a blast over the weekend.

Kremlin, shifting blame for war failures, axes military commanders. Since the invasion began in February, Russian commanders have been dismissed, demoted and sidelined over military failures, and others have been killed in battle.

Russia appoints new overall commander for its military in Ukraine. Russia has appointed a new commander to lead all of its forces in Ukraine as the Kremlin's war marches into its eighth month.

NORTH KOREAN THREAT

NKorea confirms simulated use of nukes to ‘wipe out' enemies. North Korea's recent barrage of missile launches were the simulated use of its tactical battlefield to “hit and wipe out” potential South Korean and U.S. targets, state media reported Monday, as its leader signaled he would conduct more provocative tests.

INCREASING DANGER? – North Korea's threat. North Korea has for decades been testing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles in defiance of international demands to stop. North Korea's authoritarian leader, Kim Jong-un, has picked up the pace this year, testing a record number of missiles so far. The North fired 12 in the past two weeks alone, including two early today. Last week, one flew over Japan, the first such launch since 2017, setting off alarms and panicking residents.

NKorea launches 2 missiles toward sea after US-SKorea drills. North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters on Sunday, the latest of a recent barrage of weapons tests, a day after it warned the redeployment of a U.S. aircraft carrier near the Korean Peninsula was inflaming regional tensions.

IRAN THREAT

US, UK hold drone drill in Persian Gulf after Iran seizures. The U.S. Navy held a joint drone drill with the on Friday in the Persian Gulf, testing the same unmanned ships that Iran twice has seized in recent months in the Middle East.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

CRISIS ON OUR DOORSTEP – Haiti set to seek aid from foreign forces amid crises, officials say. Haiti's government is set to seek the assistance of foreign security forces, amid compounding crises that have plunged the country into deepening chaos, two Haitian officials told The Washington Post.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

AND PRESENT DANGER – Space Armageddon: Why the Pentagon fears Russia and China's star wars weaponry. Early last month senior Pentagon officials huddled for two days of top secret discussions about Russia and China's space weapons. Experts from the U.S. Space Command, the Missile Defense Agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the CIA, among others, delivered classified briefings on the grave threat posed by these incredibly destructive high-tech devices. A highly-classified tabletop wargame followed.

US Army on track to field 24 systems in FY23 in bid for a modern force. The U.S. Army is set to deliver hypersonic weapons, missiles capable of reaching 500 kilometers and a cannon that will reach double its current range as part of a group of two dozen systems it plans to field during the next year. 

National Guard struggles as troops leave at faster pace. Soldiers are leaving the Army National Guard at a faster rate than they are enlisting, fueling concerns that in the coming years units around the country may not meet military requirements for overseas and other deployments.
