US Sends Troops To Nigeria As Washington Rethinks Its Africa Strategy

The U.S. has discreetly sent a small military team to Nigeria, signaling a new phase in counterterrorism cooperation — and a broader shift in how Washington operates across Africa.

AFRICOM commander Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson confirmed the deployment Tuesday, saying it followed talks with Nigerian officials and reflects a shared decision to deepen military coordination. The team will bring “unique capabilities” to assist Nigerian forces battling Boko Haram and Islamic State-linked militants. Officials declined to release details on the unit’s size or mission.

The move builds on years of uneven U.S.-Nigeria military cooperation. Washington has previously provided intelligence, training, and logistical support, but engagement has waxed and waned amid concerns over civilian harm and Nigeria’s ability to contain extremist violence.

Rather than deploying large combat units, U.S. defense officials now favor smaller, specialized teams designed to strengthen partner forces from behind the scenes — a strategy increasingly used across Africa as jihadist violence spreads from the Sahel into coastal West Africa.

The Nigeria deployment fits that pattern. It follows U.S. airstrikes late last year targeting Islamic State affiliates and comes as Washington reassesses its footprint on the continent, balancing counterterrorism priorities with competition from China and Russia for influence.

U.S. officials stressed the deployment is limited in scope, but the message is broader: the United States is selectively reengaging in Africa — with fewer boots on the ground but more targeted involvement where instability threatens regional and global security.

Russia does it … China does it … Iran does it … Cuba and other smaller countries do it … We had better do what is necessary to put a stop to their actions.

It seems that even some of the sanctuary cities are getting a bit tired of the chaos. Even if not keep all of those herded up and confined within so they can be rounded up. Any paid insurrectionist will have to put their life in jeopardy to not get caught, jailed, etc. Maybe the should be rounded up and deported as well.
