China Appears To Threaten World Leaders Over ‘Appeasement’ Of Trump

In an ominous statement issued Monday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce cautioned world leaders that “appeasement cannot bring peace, and compromise cannot be respected,” as the global community reels from President Donald Trump’s sweeping new trade tariffs. The message appears intended to dissuade nations from negotiating new trade deals with the United States — or risk facing the wrath of Beijing.

The Chinese government’s statement comes in direct response to Trump’s April 2 announcement of “Liberation Day” tariffs, which imposed steep, reciprocal duties on nearly every country that trades with America. Tariff rates vary depending on the size of each country’s trade imbalance with the U.S., with the highest penalties — up to 50% — targeting countries like Lesotho, Madagascar, and Vietnam. China currently faces a 145% tariff, and Trump has threatened to hike it as high as 245%, citing national security and Beijing’s role in the illicit fentanyl trade.

While most countries received a 90-day reprieve from the new tariffs to encourage negotiations, China was explicitly excluded, prompting an escalating war of words and economic posturing between the world’s two largest economies.

“To seek so-called exemptions by damaging the interests of others for one’s own temporary selfish interests is to seek the skin of a tiger,” the ministry said. “This will ultimately only fail on both ends and harm others and oneself.”

The statement continued, “China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China’s interests. If this happens, China will never accept it and will resolutely take countermeasures.”

The ministry stopped short of naming specific countermeasures, leaving open the possibility of future economic retaliation.

The warning from Beijing was not without a heavy dose of irony. China’s call for fairness and mutual respect stood in stark contrast to its global reputation for environmental degradation, rampant intellectual property theft, espionage, and exploitative economic practices. From massive state-sponsored hacking operations targeting Western companies and governments, to aggressive Belt and Road projects accused of plunging developing nations into debt traps, China’s track record often contradicts the very values it claims to champion. While urging other nations to avoid “selfish” behavior, Beijing itself has long been criticized for pursuing its own interests with little regard for global rules or ethical standards — including polluting at world-leading levels, undermining international trade norms, and copying foreign innovations without consequence.

At an April 7 press conference, Trump said, “Virtually every country wants to negotiate. If I didn’t do what I did over the last couple of weeks, you wouldn’t have anybody who wants to negotiate.”

Last week, Trump met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and held talks with leaders of Japan and Mexico, praising the discussions as “productive.” He also revealed that Vietnam—initially slapped with a 46% tariff—sent a high-level delegation to Washington within 24 hours of the announcement to renegotiate.

Meanwhile, Chinese dictator Xi Jinping launched a diplomatic offensive across Southeast Asia, with stops in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia aimed at shoring up support against U.S. economic pressure. In Vietnam, Xi and To Lam signed a series of Belt and Road infrastructure deals, deepening economic ties between the two communist nations.

In an op-ed published in Vietnam’s Nhan Dan newspaper, Xi warned, “Trade war and tariff war will produce no winner, and protectionism will lead nowhere.”

His visit to Hanoi was particularly significant, as Vietnam was one of the first countries to respond positively to Trump’s call for new trade terms—highlighting the delicate balancing act smaller nations must perform between the two superpowers.
