Comedian Theo Von Backs Trump’s Tariff Plan

Comedian and popular podcast host Theo Von is throwing his support behind President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy, framing it as a last-ditch effort to revive America’s hollowed-out towns and cities. In a recent episode of his podcast, Von spoke candidly about what he’s witnessed while traveling the country on tour, describing countless American downtowns as “empty” and “boarded up.”

“The goal of tariffs is, if it costs more for people to bring their products in then they will build them here,” Von explained. “So it’s kind of a long-term play. It’s going to take a while.” But according to Von, time may be running out. “If we don’t try this, then I think it’s a wrap.”

Von, who has performed in hundreds of cities across the U.S. over the past year, said the devastation in many communities has become impossible to ignore. “There’s nothing there. It’s empty downtowns. It’s boarded up,” he said. “And so you start to be like, nothing’s going to change. There’s nothing coming that’s going to make that better.”

President Trump’s trade strategy aims to decouple the United States from its heavy reliance on Chinese manufacturing and bring production back to American soil. The approach involves sweeping tariffs intended to make foreign goods less attractive and give American manufacturing a fighting chance. According to the White House, more than 130 countries are currently engaged in trade discussions with the U.S. as part of this broader effort.

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Sunday that these negotiations are critical to restoring U.S. economic independence. “We’re seeing the beginning of a global shift,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “Our goal is to bring back the industries and jobs that once built the backbone of American prosperity.”

Public sentiment appears to be firmly behind the strategy. According to recent polling, a staggering 80 percent of Americans support bringing manufacturing back to the U.S.—a figure that cuts across party lines and highlights growing frustration with globalization’s impact on American workers.

Von’s remarks, while unorthodox coming from a comedian, resonate with a growing number of Americans who feel left behind by decades of outsourcing and free trade. His voice adds cultural weight to a policy discussion that often remains confined to economic think tanks and political soundbites.

In an era where pop culture figures rarely weigh in on complex economic issues—let alone in support of conservative trade policies—Von’s comments are being praised by Trump supporters as a welcome and honest reflection of working-class America.

In the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, Von conducted in-depth interviews with then-candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance. In August 2024, Von joined Trump at his Bedminster, New Jersey country club, engaging in a candid discussion that touched on topics such as healthcare reform, border security, and Trump’s personal reasons for abstaining from alcohol and drugs.

In October 2024, Von hosted Senator JD Vance on his podcast, where they delved into Vance’s experience as Trump’s vice-presidential running mate. The conversation also explored Vance’s personal history, including his family’s struggles with addiction, and lighter moments like memorable rivalries at Ohio State vs. Michigan games.

These interviews were part of a broader strategy by Trump and Vance to connect with younger, predominantly male audiences through long-form, conversational media. By appearing on podcasts like Von’s, which boasts a significant following among younger listeners, they aimed to humanize their public personas and discuss policy issues in an accessible manner.

The impact of these appearances was notable, with listeners praising the authenticity of the discussions. One viewer commented that the interview with Vance provided a “down to earth” perspective from a politician, suggesting it could influence voter perceptions positively. Similarly, Trump’s conversation with Von was highlighted as a rare, genuine exchange, offering insights into his personal life and views beyond typical campaign rhetoric.

While Trump and Vance actively sought out platforms popular with younger and often politically disaffected audiences, Harris largely avoided new media outside of tightly curated appearances. One of the few exceptions was her controversial interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, which drew criticism for its tone and lack of substantive policy discussion. Critics argued that Harris’s reluctance to engage with broader, unscripted platforms limited her reach and gave the impression that her campaign was more focused on image control than authentic dialogue.
