University officials in Florida are using simple language tweaks to keep Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in higher education, defying a state law banning it.
At Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), they scrapped the “DEI” title in favor of “belonging,” said FAMU Senior Career Specialist Sean Collins on Accuracy in Media’s hidden camera.
“So, even though we still do it, we’re not supposed to say it,” he told AIM’s undercover investigator.
When he was asked whether the office of DEI had been disbanded, he said, “Yes and no.”
“So it’s not called that no longer,” Collins explained.
AIM President Adam Guillette took a trip to FAMU to confront officials about their brazen defiance of the law.
But when he asked FAMU Director of the Career and Professional Development Center Tamara Taylor about Collins’ admission, she referred him to the Office of Communications.
Guillette even asked if Taylor, specifically, was complying with the state DEI law, which she refused to answer, once again pointing him to the office of communications.
Later, Guillette showed the video of Collins’ comments to FAMU Senior Director of Strategic Communications Rachel James-Terry, who seemed less concerned with his admission and more concerned with AIM’s motive.
“Oh he doesn’t know you’re recording him clearly,” she said. “You probably should have advised him that you were.”
Guillette explained that AIM employs its tactics to get the truth out of subjects, which likely wouldn’t be told if they were aware of the camera.
Instead of giving any answers regarding the school’s deceptive DEI efforts, she told Guillette to “comply with our process, which is to contact us for any interview request.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., signed Senate Bill (SB) 266 in 2023 to prohibit institutions from using public money to fund DEI initiatives and the social activism that is frequently included in them.
And while schools like FAMU did away with their offices of DEI as well as the term’s use, they’ve admitted on hidden camera that harmful programming is still flourishing on their campuses. By simply changing their language, these university officials are able to continue pumping woke DEI into their institutions.
