Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

Two male students at Stone Bridge High School in Loudoun County, Virginia, have been suspended after expressing discomfort with a transgender-identifying student using the boys’ locker room. According to sources familiar with the case, the students raised concerns about a biological female student, who identifies as male, entering the locker room and recording video — an action that violates school policy.

Instead of addressing the recording, Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) launched a Title IX investigation targeting the boys. Two of them were suspended for 10 days and accused of sexual harassment and sex-based discrimination. The district also issued a no-contact order and is requiring a “corrective action plan” to be drafted with administrators.

One of the suspended students has since left Virginia. LCPS officials have stated that if he returns, the disciplinary action will be enforced.

Washington, D.C.’s ABC affiliate 7News reports:

“We’re concerned,” a Virginia father told 7News Reporter Nick Minock about the investigation into his son.

The Virginia father told 7News that LCPS is formally investigating whether his son committed sexual harassment after he and two friends talked about being uncomfortable with the fact that there was a male-identifying classmate in the boy’s locker room.

“He was questioning why there was a female in the males’ locker room,” the father said.

“And other boys were uncomfortable [with a female in the boys’ locker room],” he added. “There were other boys asking the same question. They [LCPS] created a very uncomfortable situation. They’re young, they’re 15 years old. They’re expressing their opinions, and now they’re being targeted for expressing those opinions.”

Attorney General Steps In

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has weighed in, calling the district’s response a “disturbing misuse of authority.” He said the students were punished not for any misconduct, but for expressing discomfort over sharing private facilities with a student of the opposite biological sex.

Miyares has referred the case to the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice, urging federal review of what he described as an overreach of Title IX enforcement.

Part of a Broader Pattern

This case adds to a pattern of controversy for LCPS, which has repeatedly drawn headlines over transgender policies, parental rights, and student safety. Nevertheless, the district continues to allow students to use bathrooms and locker rooms based on gender identity, despite past federal pressure and court rulings that question the legality of the practice under Title IX.

A Political Flashpoint Since 2021

These issues helped reshape Virginia’s political landscape in 2021, when Republican Glenn Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe in a surprise upset. Education — especially concerns over CRT, pandemic-era mandates, and school transparency — was central to Youngkin’s closing message.

LCPS was at the heart of that strategy. Incidents involving sexual assault, transgender policies, and district accountability became rallying points for suburban parents. McAuliffe’s now-infamous debate line — “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach” — alienated voters already wary of government overreach.

While other issues like inflation and dissatisfaction with President Biden also shaped the outcome, Youngkin’s focus on schools helped close the gap in the final weeks.

2025 Race Could Follow Similar Pattern

Looking ahead to Virginia’s 2025 gubernatorial race, Democrats have a clear fundraising advantage. Former U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger (D) is widely seen as the frontrunner, with over $27 million raised and $15 million cash on hand. Her opponent, Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle‑Sears, trails significantly in both metrics.

Still, polling shows that two of the three top voter concerns — cost of living and immigration — currently favor Republicans. If education rises again as a major issue, especially in the final stretch, it could shift momentum.

And, as The Hill noted Tuesday, the latest Roanoke College poll from the battleground state brings much-needed good news for Earle-Sears:

Spanberger leads Earle-Sears 46 percent to 39 percent among likely voters in the poll released Tuesday; 14 percent of voters said they were undecided, while 1 percent said they would vote for someone else. The previous Roanoke College poll of the race was released in May and showed Spanberger leading 43 percent to 26 percent, and the latest polling average released earlier this month by The Hill’s partners at Decision Desk HQ shows Spanberger leading Earle-Sears 45.2 percent to 36 percent.

Seventy-six percent of likely voters said they were “very certain” of their choice for governor, while 21 percent said they were “somewhat certain.”

Virginia Republicans have sounded the alarm about their chances in the gubernatorial race, pointing to Earle-Sears significantly trailing Spanberger in fundraising and polls.

However, the Roanoke College poll showed that the closest races in Virginia’s offyear elections continue to be the lieutenant governor and attorney general contests.

Whether this latest LCPS controversy becomes another political flashpoint that boosts Earle-Sears’ chances remain to be seen. But the dynamics that helped fuel Youngkin’s rise haven’t gone away — and school-related battles continue to shape voter sentiment across Virginia.
