Peter Roussel, known for his work with three past presidents has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 81 years old.
Roussel worked as the Press Secretary for George H. W. Bush prior to his presidency when Bush was a member of the U.S. Congress and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. He also worked as President Gerald R. Ford’s staff assistant and Deputy Press Secretary under President Ronald Reagan.
According to The Washington Examiner, Roussel got his start in politics when he joined a public relations firm in Houston in 1966. One of his first clients was the influential Republican Texas Sen. John Tower. He moved on to help Bush, then a congressman, as a spokesman and joined him on several of the former president’s career stops, including as chairman of the Republican National Committee.
He later helped Bush ally James A. Baker, then chief of staff for President Gerald Ford, in the 1976 campaign. Later, he joined the Reagan White House as a spokesman and was tasked to help Judge Sandra Day O’Connor become the first woman on the court.
In a statement, Sam Houston State University said Roussel was distinguished as the S.H.S.U. Philip G. Warner Chair of Journalism, where he worked as a professor teaching the next generation about public relations and press-presidency interactions.
The S.H.S.U. College of Arts and Media posted on social media saying, “it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Roussel, our distinguished Philip G. Warner Chair of Journalism. He lived and taught the value of a life of service and stands as an exemplar for all who were fortunate to know him.”
