Vermont Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy was admitted to a D.C.-area hospital Thursday evening.
Leahy, who is 82 years old, was admitted to the hospital after “not feeling well” and was kept overnight for observation according to the Senator's office.
The Vermont Democrat is retiring at the end of this term after more than four decades in office.
Leahy, 82, was briefly hospitalized at the start of the Democrats' 50-50 Senate majority in 2021, then broke his hip this year in a fall. Leahy had returned to his duties this fall and was walking around the Senate hallways in September, chatting up reporters and Senate staffers, according to Politico.
Leahy's office said it will “offer updates as warranted.” The Senate is now in recess until after the midterm elections in November.
Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) is favored to take Leahy's seat in a race against GOP candidate Gerald Malloy. The latest University of New Hampshire poll reported Welch with a 35-point advantage over his Republican opponent.
