On Monday, two large earthquakes and multiple aftershocks rocked parts of Turkey and Syria.
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck central Turkey and northwest Syria in the early morning hours during a bitter cold snap. A 7.7 quake followed hours later.
Many buildings in Syria have significant structural damage following years of civil war, exacerbating the destruction.
The death toll currently stands at about 5,000. Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey estimate fatalities could rise to 10,000.

The level of destruction caused by the earthquake in Turkey makes it look like a war zone. This is utterly heartbreaking. Pray for Turkey and especially for the people trapped under the rubble. pic.twitter.com/PeqPXoNKlF
