Kash Patel, tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as FBI Director, has been notified by the FBI that he was the target of an Iranian hacking operation on Tuesday. According to ABC News, the hackers are believed to have accessed at least some of Patel’s communications:
President-elect Donald Trump nominated his longtime ally Patel on Saturday after announcing he planned on firing FBI director Christopher Wray.
Patel has been a staunch supporter of Trump for years and served in his first administration in a number of roles.
A Trump representative confirmed Patel’s involvement in the incoming administration’s efforts to counter Iranian activities but declined to comment on the alleged cyber breach.
“Kash Patel was a key part of the first Trump administration’s efforts against the terrorist Iranian regime and will implement President Trump’s policies to protect America from adversaries as the FBI Director,” said Trump transition spokesman Alex Pfeiffer.
The FBI has not released details about the scope of the hacking campaign or the specific communications compromised. The alleged perpetrators remain unidentified.
On Tuesday evening, CNN highlighted the growing momentum behind Kash Patel’s potential nomination as FBI Director, noting his chances are “climbing ever higher.”
“The key number here is zero,” remarked Harry Enten, referring to the absence of Republican senators opposing Patel’s nomination. “That’s how many GOP senators have come out against him. Kash Patel’s odds to lead the FBI seem to be climbing ever higher.”
