Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

South Korea finds itself at a crossroads as the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), the nation’s largest labor union, calls for an indefinite general strike beginning today. Representing 1.2 million workers across key sectors, the KCTU is demanding the resignation of President Yoon Suk Yeol, accusing him of undermining democracy with Tuesday’s short-lived “martial law declaration.” The strike not only intensifies political tensions but also threatens the economic stability that South Korea relies on, particularly its globally significant industries like semiconductors, automobiles and electronics.

BusinessKorea reports:

In a press conference held at the KCTU headquarters in Jeong-dong, Seoul, the central executive committee of the union declared, “Together with the people and at the forefront of their fight, we will push for the immediate resignation of President Yoon.”

The union added, “The KCTU’s general strike will mark the beginning of ending inequality and polarization, paving the way for a new era of labor respect. Through this resignation strike, let us move toward a new society where labor rights and public welfare are guaranteed.”

The KCTU called on union members in the metropolitan area to gather at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul at 9 a.m. on the same day.

Regional members were instructed to assemble at locations designated by their regional headquarters.

Yoon rescinded his decree after the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea unanimously voted 190-0 to demand its abolition.

The abrupt resolution came six hours after Yoon’s declaration of martial law during an unannounced late-night television address. In his speech, the president accused the opposition of colluding with North Korea and engaging in anti-state activities. His accusations were based on the opposition’s efforts to impeach key prosecutors and block the government’s budget proposal—actions Yoon described as “paralyzing state affairs” and “turning the National Assembly into a den of criminals.”

The KCTU: A History of Confrontation

Known for its militant approach, KCTU has consistently championed worker rights and systemic reforms through large-scale strikes and protests. This latest action underscores its dissatisfaction with the current administration, framing President Yoon’s leadership as a direct threat to popular sovereignty. The union’s demands extend beyond leadership change to include broader systemic reforms aimed at redistributing power from South Korea’s corporate elite to its labor force.

The KCTU’s decision to strike holds immense disruptive potential. Its members represent industries that are the lifeblood of South Korea’s economy. A prolonged strike could halt manufacturing, delay exports, and ripple through global supply chains. However, this approach risks alienating ordinary South Koreans who may view the disruption as overreach in a time of economic uncertainty.

The Role of Chaebols in the Crisis

South Korea’s chaebols—family-owned conglomerates like Samsung, Hyundai and LG—are central to the nation’s economy. These corporations drive exports and employ millions, but KCTU argues their dominance has often come at the expense of workers, fostering economic inequality and monopolistic practices. Historically, chaebols have resisted union activities, employing strategies to weaken labor power and lobbying for policies that maintain their control.

This strike puts chaebols in a precarious position. Production delays and economic instability threaten their profitability and reputation on the global stage. While the KCTU’s actions target government policies, the ripple effects inevitably pressure these corporate giants. Chaebols are likely to advocate for swift resolution—whether through negotiation or government intervention.

A Critical Test for President Yoon

For President Yoon, the KCTU’s strike presents yet another significant challenge. The Democratic Party, the main opposition, has already called for his resignation, amplifying political pressure. Accusations of authoritarianism following his martial law declaration compound the issue, eroding public trust. How Yoon navigates this crisis will shape his South Korea’s political landscape long after he’s gone.
