Alaska Moves To Disqualify Namesake Challenger To Republican Senator

Election officials say evidence does not support candidate’s eligibility as investigation into unusual Senate bid intensifies

Alaska election officials have taken a major step toward removing a U.S. Senate candidate who shares the same name as incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, escalating a controversy that has drawn national attention in one of the country’s most closely watched Senate races.

In a preliminary determination issued Wednesday, Alaska Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher informed candidate Dan J. Sullivan that state officials believe he may not be eligible to appear on the ballot and gave him a deadline to provide additional evidence in support of his candidacy.

The decision comes days after Alaska Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom announced a formal investigation into whether the Petersburg resident entered the race in good faith or as part of an effort to confuse voters by sharing both the incumbent senator’s name and Republican affiliation.

If the preliminary finding stands, it could remove one of the most unusual candidates from a race that Democrats view as a potential pickup opportunity in their effort to regain control of the Senate.

State Questions Candidate’s Eligibility

According to Beecher’s letter, election officials concluded that “the preponderance of evidence” does not support the challenger’s eligibility to seek the office. The letter reportedly did not detail the specific evidence behind that conclusion but gave Sullivan an opportunity to respond before a final determination is made.

The challenger, a retired teacher and former U.S. Forest Service employee from Petersburg, had already been certified by the state and listed on the candidate roster as “Dan J. Sullivan.” The incumbent appears on election materials as “Dan S. Sullivan” and is identified as the incumbent.

The dispute centers not on the constitutional qualifications for serving in the Senate — age, citizenship, and residency — but on allegations that the candidacy may have been filed primarily to create voter confusion.

Incumbent Alleges Coordinated Effort

The controversy erupted after the incumbent senator accused his namesake challenger of participating in a scheme designed to siphon votes away from him and improve the prospects of former Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola, who is challenging Sullivan in what has become one of Democrats’ top Senate targets for 2026.

Republican officials and allies have pointed to the timing of the candidacy and the potential for voter confusion under Alaska’s unique election system, which uses a nonpartisan primary followed by ranked-choice voting. Under that system, the top four finishers in the August primary advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has argued that the candidacy warrants scrutiny and has pressed state officials to investigate.

Fox News recently reported that metadata linked to a campaign announcement appeared to show involvement by a Democratic political consultant, though no evidence has publicly emerged linking the Peltola campaign or the Alaska Democratic Party to the candidate’s decision to run.

Challenger Denies Any Coordination

Dan J. Sullivan has repeatedly denied allegations that his campaign is a sham operation.

In interviews this week, he said the decision to run was entirely his own and insisted he has had no contact with the Peltola campaign, Democratic Party officials, or national Democratic operatives regarding his candidacy.

“This is my choice,” Sullivan told the Associated Press earlier this week, rejecting claims that he was recruited to influence the outcome of the race.

After Dahlstrom launched the investigation, the challenger accused state officials of attempting to interfere with his constitutional rights and argued that Alaska law does not allow candidates to be excluded simply because they share a name with an incumbent officeholder.

Peltola’s campaign and the Alaska Democratic Party have also denied any involvement with the candidate.

Legal Questions Emerging

The state’s actions have triggered concerns among some election-law observers and civil-liberties advocates.

The ACLU of Alaska said it is unaware of any previous instance in which the lieutenant governor investigated a candidate for reasons beyond determining whether the candidate met basic legal qualifications for office. Former Alaska Attorney General Jahna Lindemuth likewise questioned whether probing a candidate’s motivations could raise constitutional concerns related to free speech and ballot access.

Those concerns could become more significant if the state ultimately moves to remove the challenger from the ballot.

For now, the race remains in flux as election officials review any response submitted by Dan J. Sullivan before issuing a final determination. With control of the Senate potentially hanging in the balance, the unusual battle between two Republican candidates with the same name has suddenly become one of the most closely watched election disputes in national politics.
