In a dramatic and heated Chicago City Council meeting, local residents erupted in anger over Mayor Brandon Johnson’s proposed $300 million property tax hike, rejected by the council in a unanimous vote. The fiery exchanges underscored growing frustration among Chicagoans not only about rising taxes in the face of rising costs of living but progressive policies seen as accommodating illegal immigrants at the expense of law abiding citizens.
The meeting, held with less than two months to go before the city must finalize its budget, became a platform for frustrated Chicago residents to voice their displeasure with Johnson’s leadership. As the council prepared to vote on the proposed property tax increase—meant to address the city’s nearly $1 billion budget shortfall—residents took turns confronting the mayor and the council about the direction the city was heading, particularly with regard to issues of immigration and spending.
The proposed property tax hike would have raised taxes for homeowners by as much as 4 percent, a burden that many residents found unacceptable given the rising cost of living and the perception that the funds would either be spent on illegal immigrants or were intended to make up for what the city had already spent on them. In a historic move, all 50 members of the City Council voted against the tax hike. Negotiations over the city’s budget will continue, with discussions focusing on finding a mix of new revenue sources and using federal pandemic relief funds to cover the shortfall outside of burdening residents with higher taxes.
The mayor had defended the tax hike, arguing it was necessary to avoid layoffs of crucial city workers, including police officers and firefighters. However, many residents were unconvinced, feeling that the city’s priorities were misplaced.
Among the angry residents at the council meeting were several vocal supporters of President-elect Donald Trump, who wore MAGA gear and took the opportunity to chastise Johnson. One of the most memorable moments came from Tyjuan Sims, a local resident, who made his feelings clear. “The feds need to address you! The DOJ needs to address you! And hopefully Donald Trump will address you,” Sims declared, accusing the mayor of putting the needs of undocumented immigrants ahead of Chicago natives. “You’re gonna protect the undocumented, while you’re gonna allow for the citizens in Chicago suffer under your, what? Three percent?”
This was not the first time Johnson had faced intense backlash from Chicago residents. The mayor’s support for programs designed to assist the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants arriving in the city has led to heated debates. In February, Chicagoans expressed their displeasure over the city’s decision to allocate millions of taxpayer dollars to provide food, housing, and healthcare for migrants, many of whom were being bused to Chicago from southern border states.
The exchange also brought Chicago’s shifting political landscape to the forefront. Though historically known as a deep blue stronghold, Trump made significant strides in the city as well as Illinois as a whole. Dennis White, another resident who donned a black MAGA hat, warned the council that the city was on the verge of becoming more conservative. “You know that Trump had pulled 45 percent of the vote in the state of Illinois, 37 percent in Chicago. That’s the statistic. That means Illinois is turning purple. We gonna turn red.”
While the mayor’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment, it is clear that Mayor Johnson faces an increasingly vocal and organized opposition from his own constituents. The unanimous rejection of his property tax hike is just the latest indication that Chicago residents are becoming fed up with traditional tax and spend progressivism.

Why are they unhappy? They’ve nurtured the largest and most corrupt Democrat machine in the country for nearly a hundred years. They vote for what they’ve got. Enjoy!
This is not a surprise to me, I live in a City, in Florida, with like minded City and County OFFICIAL’S.
