Florida Governor Ron DeSantis addressed accusations leveled by Vice President Kamala Harris, who chastized him for not taking her call as Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Speaking to reporters on the campaign trail, Harris called DeSantis “selfish” and “utterly irresponsible” for allegedly ignoring her outreach regarding Milton. The storm, classified as an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 hurricane, threatens Florida less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene caused widespread destruction and left 20 people dead in Florida before moving inland where it caused devastating flooding in North Carolina.
In response to Harris’ remarks, DeSantis clarified that he had been in regular communication with President Biden, FEMA and state agencies. He also emphasized that Harris had not been involved in any past disaster recovery efforts during her time as vice president.
“She has no role in this,” DeSantis said, challenging Harris’ involvement in the situation. “In fact, she’s been vice president for three and a half years. I’ve dealt with a number of storms under this administration. She has never contributed anything to any of these efforts.”
DeSantis also accused Harris of politicizing the storm, attributing her comments to her ongoing presidential campaign.
Last week, FEMA admitted it is running out of funds for hurricane relief. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed Wednesday that the agency doesn’t expect to have enough resources to provide assistance through the end of hurricane season, after spending $1 billion on illegal immigration-related expenses.
Forecasters predict Milton will make landfall as a major hurricane in the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday.
