Rory Sykes, a former Australian child star who was blind and lived with cerebral palsy, tragically lost his life in the recent Malibu wildfires at age 32. Despite his mother’s desperate efforts to save him, circumstances, partially caused by local authorities, made his escape impossible.
The wildfire, part of the devastating blazes sweeping through Southern California, engulfed the family’s estate, leaving Sykes unable to flee due to his condition. His mother, Shelley Sykes, was recovering from a broken arm at the time, rendering her unable to carry him to safety.
“He said, ‘Mom, leave me,’” Shelley recounted in an emotional interview. “I couldn’t lift him. I couldn’t move him. When the fire department brought me back, his cottage was burnt to the ground.”
Shelley explained that she ran to find help as local phone lines were down, preventing her from calling 911. Tragically, by the time she returned with firefighters, the fire had consumed the property. Officials later confirmed that Rory had died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Horrific.
Sykes, 32, was unable to move because of his condition as the fire approached.

The tragedy was compounded by a lack of critical resources. Water supplies in the area had been shut off by the local water district, reportedly to conserve pressure for fire crews. This hindered Shelley’s ability to protect her son as the flames closed in.
Rory’s story was one of resilience and inspiration. Known for his time as a host on the British RTV program Kiddy Kapers in 1998, a show produced by his mother, Rory became a beloved figure. His early life, shaped by overcoming significant physical challenges, was chronicled in Shelley Sykes’ autobiography, Callum’s Cure.
In addition to his on-screen work, Rory dedicated his life to philanthropy, raising awareness for those living with disabilities and serving as a symbol of courage. His passing is a profound loss for all who knew him.
The Malibu wildfires, among the most destructive in California history, have prompted questions about emergency preparedness, infrastructure vulnerabilities and resource allocation in fire-prone areas.
Rory Sykes will be remembered for his enduring spirit and commitment to helping others, a legacy that shines even amid this heartbreaking loss.
